Alex Varju

Apr 9, 1913 – Dec 19, 2006

Alex Varju, 93, died on Thursday, December 21, 2006. He was born in Hartford, WI on April 9, 1913, the son of the late Bertram and Helen (nee: Miller) Varju. On November 18, 1939, in Holy Name Catholic Church, Racine he was united in marriage to the former Catherine Sweeti. He had been employed by the J. I Case Co. for over 43 years, retiring in 1978. He was a longtime member of St. Richard (Holy Name) Catholic Church, the Holy Name Society, the U.A.W. Local 180 Retirees, the Case 20 Year Club, the National Association of the Civil Conservation Corps Alumni, and a 50 Year Member of the Knights of Columbus Council 697 and the Msgr. A.G. Weiler Assembly 1207. Surviving are his beloved wife of 67 years, Catherine; their daughters, Margaret Martin of Kenosha, Mary (Patrick) Raven of Milwaukee; 5 grandchildren, Theresa Martin (Mark) Vendetti of Fox River Grove, IL, Patricia Martin (Scott) Schuetz of West Bend, Lawrence (Michele) Martin of Kenosha, Elizabeth Raven (Christopher) Juern of Colgate, WI, Thomas Raven of Milwaukee; 6 great grandchildren, Alexandra and Isabella Vendetti, Matthew and Timothy Schuetz, and Ellison and Mary Jane Juern. Mr. Varju is further survived by his sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews other relatives and friends. His funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Richard Catholic Church, 15th and Grand Ave., Racine, on Tuesday, December 26th at 11:00 a.m., with Rev. Brian G. Mason officiating. Visitation will be at the church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the mass. Private entombment will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery Mausoleum, Hwy 32. Memorials can be made to the charity of your choice.
