Alice Johnson

Jul 23, 1921 – Jul 19, 2006

Racine- Mrs. Alice Johnson, 84, was born into eternal life on Wednesday, July 19, 2006. Alice was born in New Orleans, LA on July 23, 1921 to the late James and Frozene “Rosie” (nee: Lee) Lindsey. She lived in New Orleans until moving to Racine in 1945. Alice enjoyed her longtime employment with the Racine YWCA, from where she retired in 1979. She was formerly a member of St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Bailey. A very well read and intelligent woman, Alice’s all-time favorite book was “The Bible”. She and her sister, Annie Mae, held neighborhood Bible study classes for over 30 years. Cherishing her matriarch status of 5 generations, Alice commonly would share family heritage and ancestry facts with her family. Her most important accomplishment was teaching her children to know God as well as she did. Alice encouraged family with saying “Never let anything come between you and the Heart of God!” She was happiest when in the surroundings of her entire family. Alice was also a fantastic Cajun cook and was known for her gumbo and stuffed crab. Surviving are her daughters, Brenda (Maurice) Beckley of Milwaukee; Sheila Smith and Hope Johnson, both of Racine; grandchildren, Felecia Hunter, Rory (Deborah) Taylor, Darren (Diane) Taylor, Demetrius Powell, Rotonda (William “Earl” Woods) Smith-Woods, Chandra Smith; great-grandchildren, Antonio Taylor, La-Amecia Taylor, Comelia Taylor, Brittany Hunter and Sharlesia Powell; great-great-grandchildren, Zurich Taylor, Jaylen Taylor, Kennedy Hughes, Mia Taylor and Talilah Smith; nephews, Donald (Patricia) Robinson, Kenneth (Sharone) Robinson, Carl (Vicki) Robinson, Mark Chambliss and Jameel (Jehan) Ghauri; and a host of other loving special relatives and friends too numerous to mention by name. In addition to her parents, Alice was preceded in death by her beloved son, Larry Johnson; son-in-law, Herbert Smith; brother, James Lindsey Jr.; and sister, Annie Mae Chambliss. Homegoing services will be celebrated on Tuesday, July 25, 2006 at 11:00 am at Mound Cemetery Chapel, 1147 West Blvd., with Pastor R.L. Woods officiating. Interment will follow in Graceland Cemetery next to her dear son-in-law, Herbert. There will be a viewing in the funeral home, 4600 County Line Rd., on Alice’s 85th Birthday, SUNDAY, July 23rd, from 10:30 am – 1:30 pm and in Mound’s Chapel on Tuesday from 10-11 am. A special note of thanks to the nursing staff at All Saints; Dr. Robert Brown of Aurora; Dr. Mark DeCheck; and to Hospice Alliance for the compassionate care and support that was so warmly extended to Alice and to our family. God bless all of you!
