MOUNT PLEASANT – Mrs. Alyce M. Gavin, 87, passed at Artisan Senior Living on Friday, January 2, 2015.
She was born in Harper’s Ferry, Iowa on January 6, 1927, the daughter of the late Helmer and Mary (nee: Garin) Evenson. On June 25, 1946 she married the love of her life, Clair V. Gavin. They moved to Racine from Iowa in 1949. Clair preceded her in death on October 7, 1995.
Alyce sincerely enjoyed her 43 years as a hostess at Wells Brothers Restaurant. The long lasting friendships she made with co-workers and customers made it difficult for her to finally retire in 1998. Although her work was important to her, her family always came first. Alyce was happiest when in the company of her children and grandchildren.
Alyce was a member of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church.
She is survived by her daughters, Marilyn (Rick) Simpson of Normal, IL, Marlene (Dave) Jensen, Jeanne Kelemen both of Racine and her son, Jim (Johanna) Gavin of Franksville. Alyce is further survived by seven grandsons; three granddaughters; 20 great grandchildren; her brother, Victor Evenson; as well as nieces, nephews and other extended family. In addition to her parents and husband, Alyce was preceded in death by her grandson, Jamie Abbott and her sister, Marian (Jerry) Cota.
Family and friends are invited to meet at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church (6400 Spring Street) on Tuesday, January 6, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. for the celebration of Alyce’s life and funeral Mass with Rev. Terry Huebner officiating. There will be a visitation in the church on Tuesday from 10-11 a.m. Her interment will follow the Mass at Holy Cross Cemetery Mausoleum. Memorials have been suggested to Hospice Alliance.
A heartfelt thank you to Hospice Alliance and Artisan Senior Living for the loving and professional care provided. Also a special thank you to her dining companions, Lucille Krogh and Katie Edge for their kindness and friendship.

To the Gavin Family, So sorry for your loss. I remember your Mom, Grandmom, and all, so very well. She was a part of the Club with my Mom, and several other ladies Of course I remember her as hostess at Well’s Bros. In the GREAT period with Guy and Tony. She was such a classy, and beautiful woman, that will be missed by the thousands of people that remember her. God Bless all of you.

Marilyn, Jim, Marlene and Jean,
We feel so bad that we can not be there, but the weather seems to not want to cooperate. Hopefully the wonderful memories of times together will bring peace to you in the days ahead. You are in our thoughts and prayers. Sending our hugs and love to you. The Cota cousins.
