Obituary

RACINE – Alyce Anne (nee: Evans) O'Neil, 86, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by her family on Sunday, November 12, 2017.

Alyce was born in Racine, July 23, 1931, daughter of William C. Evans and Anne (Nan) (nee: Williams) Evans. On June 23, 1954 she was united in marriage to Lyle F. O'Neil. He passed away in 1989.

Alyce was a graduate of Washington Park High School's Class of 1949. She joyfully assisted in organizing class reunions every five years.

Friends and family were important to Alyce, as was her Welsh heritage and love of music. She started singing solos in the Tabernacle Presbyterian Church when she was 4 and was a soprano soloist at many weddings, funerals and social events. She also was well-known as a Gymanfa Ganu (Welsh hymn sing) director throughout the Midwest. She will be remembered for her infectious laugh and keen sense of humor, believing that "laughter cleanses the soul."

She worked for the Racine Unified School District for 20 years, dividing her time between J.I. Case High School, Washington Park High School and Jerstad Middle School. A woman of faith, Alyce was a member of the First Baptist Church in Racine. For many years she also served as secretary of the St. David's Society of Racine & Vicinity.

Alyce is survived by her children, Kelly A. (Kevin) Shearer, William E. (Colleen) O'Neil and Gwen E. (Edwin) Becker; grandchildren, Jennifer (Barry), Sean (Heather), Andrea (Robert), Daniel (Danah), Joshua, Elizabeth (Jason), Christian; stepgrandchildren, Jenny, Joy, Jacob and Julie, great-grandchildren, Seth, Johanna, Rebekah, Ava, Samuel, Zachariah, Alexa, Selah, Oliver, Eleni, and Simon; brothers Owen (Phyllis) Evans, David (Janice) Evans; sister Gwendolyn (Robert) Lehmann; many dear nieces, nephews and wonderful friends.

Family and friends are invited to meet at the Draeger-Langendorf Funeral Home and Crematory on Monday, November 20, 2017 for a visitation from 4:00 – 5:00 p.m.  A service remembering and celebrating Alyce's life will follow at 5:00 p.m. with Rev. Holly Anderle officiating.  Her interment will take place at Mound Cemetery on Monday (before the service) at 2:30 p.m.   In lieu of flowers, memorials suggested to First Baptist Church or Salvation Army of Racine.
