Cheryle (Cherry) M. Hughes, 90, died on Saturday, January 19, 2019 in Racine, Wisconsin. She was born to Clara and Fay Hughes on June 30, 1928 in Kenosha, Wisconsin. She was predeceased by her brother Dr. James A. Hughes of Kenosha, and her sister, Dr. Barbara Hughes Fowler of Madison, Wi. She is survived by her nieces Jane Fowler of Racine, Emily Fowler of Reno NV, their families, and by her beloved kitty, Scout. Cherry graduated from the University of Wisconsin, Madison and the Art Institute of Chicago. She was an early Fulbright scholar in Japan, where she studied Jomon culture and pottery for two years at Tokyo University. An independent and indomitable woman, she earned a pilot's license in her twenties and hoped to have a career as a pilot. As all the pilot jobs were taken by returning WWII veterans, Cherry pursued a love of art She was employed as a scientific illustrator in the Department of Zoology at UW Madison for decades. She was not only a gifted artist, but a woman of sharp wit and intellect, who followed advances in astronomy and space exploration until she died. The Mars Rover thrilled her. She will be greatly missed. Her family would like to thank the staff of St. Monica's and the Aurora at Home Hospice team for their genuinely kind and compassionate care.
