Caledonia – Dale David Lueneburg, 86, passed away on September 9, 2026, with his family by his side.
Dale was born in Racine on October 28, 1939, the son of the late Herbert and Louise (nee Dagelen) Lueneburg. He grew up on a dairy farm in the Town of Raymond and spent his younger years working on the farm.
In high school, Dale was a three-sport athlete, playing football, basketball, and baseball. He continued his love of sports throughout his life. Following high school, Dale attended UW-Whitewater and then enlisted in the Army in 1961. After 30 years of service, he retired from the Army Reserve.
Dale married the love of his life, Mary Kay Hoppe, on August 7, 1965. Together, they raised their three children – Pam, Kristin, and Kim. He devoted his life to being a dedicated husband, father, and grandfather, and was a longtime member of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church.
Dale retired from his civilian career with the U.S. Army. In retirement, he loved going to Camp Randall to cheer on the Badgers, as well as watching the Packers and NASCAR. He was a history buff and an avid reader, often reading three newspapers a day. He also enjoyed spending time in his yard, gardening and tending to his roses. Dale and Mary spent their winters in Florida, where they enjoyed the sunshine, the pool, and great friends.
Dale was happiest in the company of his grandchildren. Lovingly referred to as Papa, he loved watching them grow, playing in the driveway shooting pucks, throwing a baseball, and showing his support at all their events.
In addition to his loving wife, Mary Lueneburg, he is survived by his daughters, Pam (Paul) Schaffer, Kristin (Dan) Gusanders, and Kim Lueneburg; his grandchildren, Jackson (Bailey) Schaffer, Madison (Peyton) Landers, Jonathan Schaffer, Will Gusanders, Drew Gusanders, and Kate Gusanders; his great-granddaughter, Sadie Schaffer; and his five nephews. Dale was preceded in death by his parents; his sister and brother-in-law, Viola and Roger Lort; and his sister-in-law, Margie Krien.
Dale will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever held in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
A celebration of Dale’s life will take place at the Educators Credit Union Headquarters (321 SE Frontage Road in Mount Pleasant) on Sunday, September 27, 2026. There will not be a formal service. There will be an open house and time to meet with the family between 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m.
A private ceremony will take place at the Southern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family strongly encourages memorials in Dale's name to one's favorite charity.
