Derrick Oates, 62, of Racine, Wisconsin, passed away peacefully on May 7, 2026, after a courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by the love of his family.

Born on January 31, 1964, in Racine, Wisconsin, Derrick was the beloved son of Steve and Nellie Oates (née Williams). He dedicated more than 30 years of hard work and commitment as a supervisor at Jensen Metal Products, where he earned the respect of coworkers through his leadership, dedication, and strong work ethic.

Derrick found his greatest joy in the simple things in life. He loved barbecuing, playing the slots, and above all, spending time with his family. Whether it was sharing a meal, telling stories, or simply being together, those moments meant everything to him. He was a loving husband, proud father, and caring grandfather whose presence brought comfort, laughter, and strength to everyone around him.

He is survived by his wife, Gay Lynn, with whom he shared 40 years of marriage. He leaves behind his five children: April (Bryan) Lang, Leslie (Lamar) French, Dominique Greer, Destiny (Cory) Schmidt, and Derrick (Aisha) Oates II. He is also survived by his sister Angela Oates of Phoenix, Arizona; brother Dino Oates of Racine, Wisconsin; sister-in-law Mary Brown of Racine; sister-in-law Takeisha Spann Moore of Kenosha; brother-in-law Marshawn Bogan of Racine; and brother-in-law Terrell Smith of Milwaukee.

Derrick was a proud and loving grandfather to 15 cherished grandchildren, two goddaughters, and three great-grandchildren who will carry his memory forward. He also leaves behind one niece, two nephews, extended family members, and dear friends who loved him deeply.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Steve and Nellie Oates; his brother, Darrell Oates; his mother-in-law, Willie Mae Greer; and his father-in-law, William Goss Jr.

Funeral services will be held on May 22, 2026, at Draeger-Langendorf Funeral Home, 4600 County Line rd Mount Pleasant WI, 53403. Visitation will begin at 11:00 a.m., followed by funeral services at 12:00 p.m. Burial will follow at West Lawn Memorial Park.

Derrick's strength, love, and dedication to his family will never be forgotten. His legacy lives on through the many lives he touched, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
