Racine – Douglas Hugh Souter, age 66, passed away peacefully, surrounded with the love of his daughters, at Ascension – Columbia St. Mary’s Hospital in Milwaukee on Friday, January 13, 2023.

Douglas was born in New Albany, MS on March 17, 1956, to the late Hugh and Gladys (nee: Mayfield) Souter. He was a graduate of JI Case High School. As an accomplished welder, Doug was employed by the Chrysler Corp. for over 28 years.  After retirement, Doug went in business for himself, opening Slice of Life Lounge aka Doug’s Place on the south side of Racine.  Currently he was employed with In-Sink-Erator.

Among many of his interests, Douglas was a phenomenal musician – playing bass guitar with the band he formed, “High Stakes” for many years; fishing, watching western movies, going out to eat, and taking road trips. More than anything else, Doug loved spending time with his entire family, especially his adored daughters & grandchildren.

Surviving are his daughters, Naquisha Souter of Chicago, IL; Devin (James) Sims of Austin, TX; Rochelle Souter and Latoya Tirado (Dannie Johnson), both of Racine; grandchildren, Aryn Downer & Dedrick Richardson Jr., both of Chicago; Alize Souter, Alexis Honor, Jamie Sims, James Sims Jr. & Jayden Sims, all of Texas; Trystin Tucker, Aria Tucker & Dannie Johnson, Jr., all of Racine; sister, Patricia Scaife of Racine; brothers, Michael Souter, Patrick (Hope) Souter, Anthony Souter, all of Racine; and Dana (Delilah) Souter of Texas; brother-in-law, Bobby Sims of Texas; nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives & friends – too numerous to mention all by name.

Doug was preceded in death by his parents, Hugh and Gladys Souter as well as his sisters, Kamila Souter and Phoebe Souter-Sims.

Homegoing Services celebrating Doug’s life will be held in Draeger-Langendorf Funeral Home on Thursday, January 26, 2023, at 12:00 noon. Interment will follow in Graceland Cemetery. Viewing will be in the funeral home on Thursday, January 26th, from 10:00 am – 12:00 noon.

I am so sorry to hear of Mr. Souter’s passing. As a friend of Naquisha’s, I know that he was incredible man with a huge heart for his family, especially his daughters. Whenever I think of strong black men, I will always think of Naquisha’s dad.

May he rest in peace and be in the company of angels, and may all of the family find comfort in each other, their sweet memories and his impactful legacy.

Sending all of my love to each of you.

Doug was a great guy and a great musician. God had blessed him with a terrific ear and a passion for music. He will always be one of my very favorite students as he studied jazz guitar with me. He left our world too soon, however God had other plans. I know he will be missed by all that knew him and those that enjoyed his talents.

Doug, who would know that just 2 weeks ago we’d run into one another and now family and friends are grieving your passing. I was blessed to meet your sister Pat many years ago, and then had the pleasure of meeting you. You will be remembered as being a man who greeted folks with a smile, calm demeanor, friendly, gentleman, and great musician, and businessman. Thank you for all you contributed to our city.

To Pat and Doug’s family, I extend my condolences to you. Your family has lost a jewel. I pray the memories of Doug will comfort your heart as the tears fall. I know God is near, and will wipe away your tears. God bless each of you!
