~~Family and friends are invited to gather for a service of remembrance on Monday, June 23 at 11am in the Draeger-Langendorf Funeral Home Chapel.  Visitation will be in the funeral home from 10am until the time of service.  Rev. Ernest J. Ni'A will be Officiating.  Interment will follow the service at Graceland Cemetery.~~Our beloved sister, aunt, cousin, and friend returned to the arms of her Heavenly Father on Monday, June 9, 2014.  The eldest of four children, two sisters and one brother, Freddiemae was born in Racine, Wisconsin on October 16, 1928 to Fred Bowman and Eunice V. Doss Bowman.  She received Christ and was baptized at Wayman A.M.E. church in Racine where she remained a faithful member until leaving home to attend college. Freddiemae received her formal education from Washington Park High School in Racine. There her friends called her "Fritz". Following graduation from high school, she received a four year scholarship from S.C. Johnson & Son to attend Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee.  Freddiemae graduated Summa Cum Laude. She also was a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority (AKA).  Freddiemae married Ellis Jerome Brown whom she met at Fisk.  They relocated to Detroit, Michigan where they raised their son, Craig Brown.  Later receiving her AMLS Degree in Library Science from the University of Michigan in 1959, Freddiemae wrote her dissertation for a Doctoral Degree in 1993.  However, when asked what accomplishment she is most proud of she said, "I was skipped in the fifth grade." Freddiemae worked as a Librarian in Racine as well as Madison, Wisconsin before moving to Detroit. She worked in managerial positions for the Detroit Public Library System for many years and was also an Assistant Professor at Wayne University in Detroit, Michigan.  In 1982 she moved to Houston, Texas to accept the position as Chief of Branch Services for the Houston Public Library System.  For her successful, meaningful and important career Freddiemae was honored with a proclamation from the City of Houston Mayor Kathy Whitmire. Freddiemae's lifelong love of reading was demonstrated in the third grade when instead of doing math with the other students, she was "lost" in independent reading and punished by spending time in the cloak closet.  Her hobbies included reading (anything about Native Americans), historical fiction, biography and travel.  She loved to travel and had visited fourteen cities in Italy.  Her greatest joy was the fun of adventures with her nieces and nephews whether in the city, country-side, movies or amusement parks. She is preceded in death by her parents and son. She leaves to cherish her memories: her three siblings; Edward Bowman (Mary Jane) of Racine; Jonita Carter (Richard) of Potomac, Maryland; and Joyce Cole of Missouri City, Texas; eight nieces and nephews, twelve great nieces and nephews, seven great-great nieces and nephews, cousins, co-workers and a host of friends.
