Obituary

Gladys Lee (nee: Mayfield) Souter, age 82, transitioned from this earthly home on October 5, 2021.

Gladys Lee (nee: Mayfield) Souter was born on July 22, 1939, in Ecru, Mississippi to the late Walter B. and Ollie Mae (nee: Ball) Mayfield.  She accepted Christ at a young age at Ecru Second Baptist Church in Ecru, MS.  She attended the Pontotoc Attendance Center in Pontotoc, MS.

Gladys was united in Holy Matrimony to the late Hugh W. Souter on September 3, 1955.  They shared 65 wonderful years of marriage; he preceded her in death on June 21, 2021.  Their union was blessed with eight children.

Gladys was last employed by Durham School Bus Services as a school bus driver until her health began to fail her.  She was always driven to work hard.  She and our dad operated Quick Mart Convenience Store/Gas Station for many years.

She was member of Mount Olivet Missionary Baptist Church in Racine, WI under the leadership of the late Pastor James W. Sanders.  She later became a member of Greater St. Luke's Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Pastor E.E. Woods.

There was nothing that gave Gladys greater joy than spending time with family and attending family gatherings.  She was a loving mother and grandmother.  She loved to cook, sew, garden, and watch college and NBA basketball games.  She had sewn many suits, dresses, and other clothing items for members of the immediate family.  Every year for many many years she would always have plenty of fresh vegetables to last during the cold winter months.  We always had plenty of butter beans, tomato soup, to last throughout the year.  All of these fresh vegetables were products of her garden.  Her signature dishes were turkey and dressing, sweet potatoes, greens, and potato salad.

To cherish her precious memories, Gladys is survived by seven children:  two daughters Patricia Scaife of Racine, WI and Phoebe (Bobby) Sims of Dallas, TX; five sons Douglas, Michael, Anthony, and Patrick (Hope) Souter all of Racine, WI and Dana (Delilah) Souter of Dallas, TX; sister Shirley Ware of Ecru, MS; and special nephew Jesse Souter of Milwaukee, WI.

Gladys is further survived by 21 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Gladys was preceded in death by parents Walter B. and Ollie Mae Mayfield; daughter Kamila Bernice Souter; granddaughter Taliesha Souter; sisters Callie Tatum and Gloris King; brother James Mayfield; sisters-in-law Bernice Souter, Geneva Morrison, Hermia Souter, and Florene Foster; brothers-in-law Archie Souter, Prentiss Tatum, Robert King, and James Ware.
