Illa Flake

May 31, 1918 – Jul 17, 2008

Racine – Mrs. Illa Flake, 90, passed away at Ridgewood Care Center on Thursday, July 17, 2008. She was born in Plantersville, Mississippi on May 31, 1918, daughter of the late Lewis and Annie (nee: Betts) Shumpert. She was married to Mr. Mondo Flake in 1934 in Plantersville. Mrs. Flake was employed by the Purnell Pride Chicken Farm, and the Northeast Mississippi Medical Center, retiring in 1984. She was a Racine resident since 1985. Mrs. Flake was a member of St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church. Her favorite pastime was spending time with family and friends talking about the “Old Days”. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Annie and Chalmers Cummings, Jr.; 5 grandchildren, Cheryl Cummings, Dwight Cummings, and David Cummings all of Racine, Daphne (James) Hamby of Broadview, Illinois, and Veronica (Rickey) Varnum of Maywood, Illinois; 7 great-grandchildren, Geoffrey, Jordan, Carl, Chrystal, Ariel, Raven, and Zuri; special cousin, Sue Betts; ; special niece, Irene Ruff; as well as many other relatives and friends. She was preceded by her husband, Mondo Flake; daughter, Rosene Morris; son, David Flake; brother, Lee Shumpert; and sister, Annie Shumpert. Homegoing services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday July 23, 2008 at St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church with Bishop Lawrence L. Kirby officiating. Burial will follow at West Lawn Memorial Park. Visitation will begin in the church at 10:00 a.m. The family would like to acknowledge and thank the staff of Ridgewood Care Center, especially Allison Coleman; and everyone at Odyssey Healthcare for the special way they cared for our loved one.
