RACINE – John S. Degenhart, 85, passed away on December 5, 2013 at the Hospice Alliance Hospice House in Pleasant Prairie.
John was born on September 8, 1928 in Billings, Montana, the son of John and Catherine (nee: Brown) Degenhart. He received his graduate degree from the University of Denver, School of Social Work where he met his future wife, Joyce Carpenter. They were married after graduate school on January 21, 1961 and enjoyed almost 53 years of travel and companionship. John moved to Racine in 1964 to work at Racine County Human Services, then to the Milwaukee Public Schools where he completed 28 years, retiring in 1989.
He enjoyed their winter home in Green Valley, AZ and spent almost 20 years between Arizona and Racine. John loved everything related to railroading, read poetry and spent time with digital photography and computers. He was fortunate to have traveled to many parts of the world with Joyce. He has a great friendship circle and will be remembered as a true gentleman.
In addition to his wife, Joyce of Racine, he is survived by his son, Michael (Carmella) Degenhart of State College, PA; his step granddaughters, Jessica and Caitlin of Washington D.C.; his sister, Frances Roberts; his niece, Dione Roberts both of Billings, MT; as well as many dear cousins.
Per John’s wishes, no formal services will be held. Memorials in John’s name may be sent to Hospice Alliance, 10220 Prairie Ridge Blvd. Pleasant Prairie, WI 53158 or to Prairie School, 4050 Lighthouse Dr. Racine, WI 53402.
