Racine – John Paul Solberg, age 80, passed away peacefully at home in his sleep on Sunday, May 21, 2017.

John was born in Racine on October 19, 1936. After attending Washington Park High School, he faithfully served our country with the United States Marine Corps attaining the rank of Corporal. On July 5, 1958 in St. Lucy Catholic Church, John was united in marriage with Diane M. (nee: Thery).

John was employed by AMC / Chrysler until his retirement. He was a longtime member of St. Lucy Catholic Church; life member of the Agerholm-Gross Detachment #346 Marine Corps League & Honor Guard, Devil Dog Pound No. 100, State of Wisconsin Marine Corps League, Racine Area Veterans Firing Squad, and the Iwo Jima Parade Float from 1991-2015. Since 1996, John proudly honored area veterans, at their funerals, on the honor guard and firing squad – averaging over 200 funerals per year – something he remained active on until the day he died.

Years ago, he was involved with the Boy Scouts as a Scout Master and enjoyed hunting. Above all, John loved attending the activities and events of his grandchildren.

Surviving are his children, Russell Solberg, Randall (Dana) Solberg and Roxanne Fay; grandchildren, Cassandra (Matt) Lunde, Lance and Brandon Solberg, R.J. Schacht; sister-in-law, Doris (Tom) Dresen; brother-in-law, Daniel (Yvonne) Thery; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends – too numerous to mention all by name. He was preceded in death by his wife, Diane Solberg, on October 4, 2010; father, Percival "Percy" Solberg; mother, Olga (nee: Hansen) Jensen; step-father, Matt Jensen; son-in-law, Bob Fay; and brother-in-law, David (MaryLu) Thery.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, May 31, 2017 at 12:00 noon at St. Lucy Catholic Church, 3101 Drexel Avenue, with Rev. Javier Guativa officiating. Interment, with military honors, will take place in Holy Cross Cemetery, Hwy 32. Visitation will be in the church on Wednesday from 10:00 am – 12:00 noon. Memorials to the Agerholm-Gross Detachment #346 Marine Corps League have been suggested.
