Josephine Vandenberg

Dec 22, 1931 – Jan 31, 2011

Josephine “Jo” Vandenberg, 79, passed away Monday, January 31, 2011, in the Francis House in South Milwaukee. She was born in Racine on December 22, 1931, the daughter of the late Mathias and Barbara (nee: Troestler) Weber.

On April 24, 1954, in St. Mary Catholic Church, she was united in marriage to Robert E. Vandenberg who preceded her in death on April 4, 1992. Jo had been employed in the City of Racine Treasurer’s Office for over 20 years. She was a member of St. Lucy Catholic Church. Jo enjoyed; bowling, golfing, playing bridge, traveling, and most of all being with her family.

Surviving are her beloved daughters; Karen (John) Gardner, of Tulsa, OK, and Susan (Craig) Welch, of Racine; grandchildren, Rick Gardner, Nikki Gardner, Ben (Margarita Bueno) Welch, Sarah Welch and her fiancée, Justin Stobbe, and Danny Welch; great granddaughter, Rayna Bueno-Welch; sister, Mary Shields, of St. Paul, MN. Her nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends further survive her. In addition to her husband and parents, Jo was preceded in death by her son Rick on January 25, 1975.

Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated in St. Lucy Catholic Church, 3101 Drexel Ave., on Saturday, February 5th at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Mark Jones officiating.  Visitation will be in the church on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the Mass. Private burial will take place in Holy Cross Cemetery Hwy 32. Memorials have been suggested to either, St. Lucy Catholic Church, St. Catherine’s High School, or the Francis House.
