Memorial Suggestions

Please direct memorials to Careers Industries, Faith Community Church or Racine Vocational Ministry.

Josie Martin, age 82 of Racine, found her peace on April 24, 2021.

Josie was born on October 24, 1938 in Woodbine, GA the youngest daughter of the late Arthur James and Viola (nee: Baily) Martin.

Josie attended Ralph Bunch Community School for Persons with Disabilities until she moved to Wisconsin.  Upon moving to Wisconsin, Josie began attending Careers Industries and worked there for approximately 25 years.  She was loved by other participants and staff.  Josie received many awards for her hard work and teamwork.

Josie loved going to church and participating in church ministry.  She formerly was a member of Hamilton Chapel United Methodist Church in Woodbine, GA and most recently attended Faith Community Church of Racine, WI where she served as a faithful and enthusiastic choir member and joined in heartfelt congregational singing.  She also enjoyed inviting people to church.

Her love of music and singing was evident to those who knew her.  When Josie would attend the Shepherds Ministries Respite Program, she would participate in their talent program always singing her favorite song—“The Lord’s Prayer”.  For many years, she also volunteered with the Salvation Army Outreach Ministry, singing in senior care facilities throughout Racine.  She enjoyed listening to hymns, gospel and ELVIS.

In her younger years, Josie enjoyed participating in Special Olympics.  She won numerous medals for her racing.  She also loved dancing and was lovingly referred to by family members as “Jojo Dancer”.

In her later years, Josie enjoyed taking rides to look at the fall colors of the trees or Christmas lights or Fourth of July fireworks.  She also enjoyed watching westerns, The Gaithers, Lawrence Welk and Touched by an Angel.  Additionally, she collected pennies throughout the year to cash them in at Christmas to purchase gifts for family members.

Josie was an avid Green Bay Packers fan.  She dawned herself in Packer gear as often as she could.

Her favorite foods were fried chicken, mushroom/swiss burgers and sweet potato pie.

Left to mourn her passing are her sister, Loretta Life; her three nieces, Sylvia Parrish, Lori Life, and Bonita (David) Thomas; her great nieces and nephews, Randi (Stefan) Mundt, Rani (Peter) Holzinger, David Michael Thomas, Stephan Myers, Tisa Nathaniel, and Tameka Life; great great nieces and nephews: Matthew, Nia, Daja, Aubrey, and Ashton

Her homegoing service will be held privately at Faith Community Church.  Internment will take place in West Lawn Memorial Park.
