Leonard Selkurt

Nov 13, 1919 – Mar 5, 2008

Leonard Selkurt, 88, passed away in Aurora St. Luke’s Hospital in Milwaukee on Wednesday, March 5, 2008, after battling heart complications. He was born in Alberta, Canada on November 13, 1919 the son of the late Ephriam and Amanda (nee: Stirley) Selkurt. On May 31, 1941 he was united in marriage to the former Helen Light. Mr. Selkurt was a graduate of Washington Park High School. He attended Bradley University and later served a 4-year apprenticeship with Caterpillar Tractor. He had been employed by Vobeda Machine and Tool for over 30 years retiring in 1986. He served with the U.S. Army under General Patton’s Third Army during WWII. He was a member, past president, elder and usher of the former Lake Park Lutheran Church and was presently a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping. He had a passion for writing poetry and for woodcarving. Surviving are his wife, of nearly 67 years, Helen; their children Drs. Joanne (Brad) Martin, Loretta (Dan) Miner, LaVerne Selkurt, Drs. Lynette (George) Zimmer, and Leonard (Amy) Selkurt; grandchildren, Julie (Steve) Hayden, Gwendolyn (Phoung) Nguyen, Elizabeth (Andy) Bjerke, Cassie Selkurt, Chloe Selkurt, Julie Zimmer, and Jeff (Kelly) Zimmer; great grandchildren, Izaac, Grace, and Anna Nguyen, Lily Hayden and Logan Bjerke. His nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends also survive him. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by their son Richard, 2 brothers, Ewald and Alvin Selkurt and a sister Johanna Keener. His funeral service, with full military honors, will be held in the funeral home on Saturday, March 8th at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. David Behling officiating. Visitation will be in the funeral home on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service. Private burial will take place on Monday at West Lawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested memorials to Holy Cross Lutheran Church.
