Racine – Madge Louise Englund, 101, passed away at home on Sunday, August 14, 2016. She was born in Viola on September 22, 1914, daughter of the late Roland and Louisa (nee: Hill) Matthes. She was married in St. Louis, Missouri on May 16, 1938 to Carl Englund. Mr. Englund preceded her in death in 1996.
Mrs. Englund recently celebrated her 100th birthday, and was overjoyed with the arrival of her first great-great-great grandchild. She was a faithful member of Blessed Hope Baptist Church and enjoyed singing old hymns; working in her flower garden, reading, and puzzles.
Madge is survived by her daughter, Mercedes Gier of Racine; 11 grandchildren; many great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; other relatives and friends. She was also preceded in death by her sons, Carl Englund and Kenneth Englund; and son-in-law Philip Gier Sr.
Funeral Services will be held in the Blessed Hope Baptist Church (4835 Taylor Ave) at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 20, 2016 with Rev. Frank Williams officiating. Interment will follow at West Lawn Memorial Park. Visitation will begin in the church at 10:00 a.m.

With much Love to family and friends. We are primarily Missouri Matthes’ as my late husband Leslie Lee Matthes and I have 3 children that live with their families here in Mo. One son and his family that are in Viroqua ,Wi Leslie was the Son of Ray and Peggy Matthes. Ray was a brother to Madge that died when Leslie was a little boy. I did have the privilege of getting to know Grandpa Roland. Who taught my husband so much. Sending much love
