Racine- Mae Bell “Big Momma” Johnson, 101, was called home by her Lord and Savior on Friday, February 22, 2013. She was born inBenton County, Mississippi on June 22, 1911 to late Alfred and Jennie (nee: King) Talley.
Mae Bell (nee:Talley) was united in marriage to Isaac James Carter on November of 1932. The couple began raising their family in Myrtle, MS. In 1955 she and her husband relocated to Racine, Wisconsin where they continued to raise their eight children. They enjoyed 23 years of marriage before his passing in October of 1956. On December 19, 1970, Mae Bell married Booker T. Johnson. They enjoyed eight years of marriage before his passing on November 29, 1979. Mae Bell was a homemaker, sheenjoyed baking, cooking, and gardening.
She professed her faith in Christ at an early age. After moving to Racine, she joined St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church, under the leadership of Bishop L.L. Kirby Senior. She was a member of St. Paul’s Gideon “300” Club.
She leaves to cherish her memory, her daughter Ruby (Finner) Hopkins (of whom she lived with for a period of time prior to her final years at Becker -Shoop Center in Mount Pleasant),Lula Grace Little, Alford Lee “Bubba” Carter, Deloise McLemore, Fay Jean Carter, LueElla Carter, Beverly (Ruth A.) Johnson, Sr., Eularine Johnson, Sally Kirkwood, and Maggie Pipkins. She also leaves 42 grandchildren, 89 great-grand children, 42+ great-great grandchildren, and a Godson, Pastor Elder John (Amanda) Smith.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Isaac James Carter and Booker T. Johnson; and her sons, David Carter, Isaac James Carter Jr., William Knox “Cool Jack” Carter, Eugene Carter, and Joe William Johnson.
A Homegoing Celebration will be held on Friday, March 1, 2013 at Compassion Tabernacle, 2044 Mead Street, at 11:00 am withElder Ray McNeal, Pastor Prentiss Robbins Jr., and Pastor Adrian Malone officiating. Interment will follow in Graceland Cemetery. Visitation will be in Compassion Tabernacle on Friday from 9:30 – 11:00 am.
