Myrtle Louise Samuels was born on September 14, 1942 in Memphis, Tennessee to the late Elder James E. Poindexter Sr. and Robbie Lee (Robertson) Poindexter. She entered into eternal rest on Sunday, March 29, 2020 at Ascension Hospital in Racine, WI surrounded by loved ones.
Myrtle, the daughter of a C.O.G.I.C. minister, accepted Christ at an early age. Myrtle graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in Memphis, Tennessee. She later graduated from Dominican College in Racine, WI with a BA in Education with a concentration in Elementary Education. Myrtle was passionate about teaching others and served as an elementary school teacher with Racine Unified School District for almost 30 years. Most of those years were spent at Giese Elementary School, until her retirement in June 2003. Even in retirement, Myrtle continued to serve as a volunteer at Giese. In retirement, she enjoyed traveling and visited Curaçao, Japan, Brussels, France, Germany, Netherlands, Italy and several destinations within the continental U.S.
Myrtle was united in marriage to Archie Dempsey Morgan on January 29, 1964. They relocated to Racine, WI the same year. Three children were born to this union, Teri Morgan of Racine, WI, Archie (Mandy) Morgan of O’Fallon, IL, and Melanie Morgan of Racine, WI.
Myrtle married Henry Wallace Samuels, Sr. on August 16, 1978. Together they had two children, Aaron (Sharon) Samuels of Racine, WI and Henry Wallace Samuels II of Atlanta, GA. She also gained four children through the relationship, Darcy (Gerald) Love, Kerri Samuels, Elena Samuels, Carol Samuels and a host of extended family she loved dearly.
Myrtle was an active member of Greater Mt. Eagle Missionary Baptist Church, where she served as the Vacation Bible School Administrator and a Word of Life Teacher. She absolutely loved gospel music and served as a longtime member of Greater Mt. Eagle’s combined choir. She also represented her church in the Gospel Music Workshop of America-Racine/Kenosha Chapter. Her favorite gospel artist was Richard Smallwood.
Myrtle leaves to cherish her memory one brother Elder Benjamin (Sylvia) Poindexter, 14 grand-children, Archie Morgan II, Simone Brown, Khiry Morgan, Shynae Brown, Kenny Brown Jr., Aaron Samuels II, J’Nay Senen, Noë Senen, Isaeah Senen, Sydni Hill, Erinn Samuels, Amber Samuels, Ciqala Senen, and Abijah Morgan. 11 great grand-children, Javion Herron, Braniyah Herron, Ja’Meir Herron, Makhai Herron, Kartiaire Brown, Sincere Herron, Khalfani Morgan, Levi Quesada, Magnolia Brown, Nazeerah Samuels, Jahvaro Stam, and Néture Brown. Several close family members, Freddie (Mary) Samuels, Janet Blue, her best friend, Ella Richardson, adopted sons, Kyle King and Pastor Keith T. Evans and her adopted daughter, Karling Thurman. She is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
Myrtle was preceded in death by her parents, Elder James E. Poindexter, Sr. and Robbie Lee Poindexter, 7 siblings, James E. Poindexter Jr., Joseph Poindexter, Larry Poindexter, Irma Loretta Moore, Dorothy Jean Blue, Lanetha Woods, Naomi Poindexter, and both husbands Archie Dempsey Morgan and Henry Wallace Samuels Sr.
The family of the late Myrtle L. Samuels would like to express our sincere gratitude for every expression of sympathy. Your calls, texts, flowers, and other deeds of kindness shown during this time of bereavement were deeply appreciated. May God continue to bless and keep you all.
