~~Norma Jean (nee: Smith) Hampton was born in Memphis, Tennessee on February 15, 1949 to the union of the late Isiah and Mildred C. (nee: Chalmers) Smith.  She was the fourth of five children. Norma made her transition to go home with the Lord on Monday, February 3, 2014.

Norma was baptized at Salem Gilfield Missionary Baptist Church in Memphis, TN by the late Reverend A. L. McCargo, at an early age. She was taught the word of God as she attended church services, Sunday school, Baptist Training Union, Vacation Bible School, and as she sang in the Youth Choir

Norma graduated from Carver High School in Memphis, and pursued her studies in Education and pledged to the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority (AKA) at Lane College in Jackson, Tennessee at Lane College, where she also met her husband, Hal Hampton Jr.

Immediately upon graduation from Lane College, Norma and Hal started their life in Racine Wisconsin, where they both started their teaching careers with Racine Unified School District.  Norma and Hal's marriage was filled with the love and joy of three children Harald, Patricia and Marcus.  Norma was a Math instructor at Starbuck and McKinley Middle schools, then at J.I. Case High School.  Norma always saw a way of reaching for higher goals; therefore while teaching at Case High School she decided to further her education by working and attaining her Masters Degree in Mathematics and Education at National Louis University.  After many years of dedicated service in The Racine Unified School District, Norma retired due to her health.

Norma was a faithful member of Wayman A.M.E Church, where she served as a Steward, she was a part of the Missionary Society , she was one of the early directors of the Young Peoples Department (YPD), as well as other organizations within the church. Norma loved God and she loved her Wayman A.M.E. Church Family.  She was always studying and striving to live by God's holy word.  God blessed her to be among us for 64 years.  She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.  She made an incredible impact on the lives of so many of her students and everyone else who was fortunate enough to meet her.

She leaves cherishing her precious memories, her husband of 44 years; Hal Hampton Jr., her children; Harald (Josielyn) Hampton Sr., Patricia (Carlos) Hampton, Marcus (Keeliah) Hampton, two brothers; Clarence (Bertha) Faulkner, Nathaniel (Barbara) Hicks Jr., sister; Delila (Marvin) Bush, sisters-in-law; Patricia (the late Earnest) Brooks and Maude Ross, nineteen grandchildren, a dear friend of the family;Theresa Vance, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Norma was preceded in eternity by both of her parents, a brother, and a nephew.

A celebration of her life will be held on Monday, February 10th at 11am at Wayman AME Church, 424 N. Memorial Dr.  Visitation will be at the church from 10am until the time of the service.  Rev. Ernest Garrison will be Officiating.   A private interment will take place at Southern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
