Racine – Rex Peter Washington Capwell, Jr., age 90; passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, January 30, 2015.

Rex was born in Racine on January 6, 1925, the son of Dr. Rex Capwell, Sr and Monica Capwell. Upon graduating from St. Catherine's High School, he went on to proudly earn Juris Doctorate from the University of Wisconsin – Madison Law School in 1947, where he also was a basketball ('45 & '46) and golf ('44-'46) letter winner. He went on to work for WTMJ from 1947-51 as a broadcaster for Wisconsin Badger football & basketball games, as well as games for the Green Bay Packers. However, with law being his number one passion, Rex was a prominent trial lawyer at Capwell, Berthelsen & Nolden, S.C. (601 Main Street) for much of his career. After retirement, he was fond of spending the winter months in sunny Naples, FL.

In July 1959, Rex was united in marriage with the love of his life, Kathleen Marie (nee: Shannon) Capwell, whom preceded him in death on December 24, 1991. He was a longtime member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. Among his interests, Rex enjoyed his cherished family, law, basketball and golf. He was one of the co-founders of the Racine County Tri-Course Golf Open and a long term director of the Western Golf Association.  One of his accomplishments was setting a first round record of 67 in 1966's Tri-Course Golf Open.

Rex was a huge proponent of education….having coached and guided many local aspiring students into and  through college. "The combination of my educational and sporting experiences at the UW provided a valuable preparation for my life, both personally and professionally. I am delighted to establish this scholarship fund, which I hope will in some small measure, repay the University for the training I received." – Rex Capwell (when he founded the Rex Capwell Men's Basketball Scholarship – UW Madison 2000.)

Surviving are his son and daughter-in-law, Kevin and Dawn Capwell of La Crosse; grandchildren, Michael, Ryan and Katrina Capwell; great-grandson, Liam Capwell; other dear relatives and friends – too numerous to mention all by name including his extended families at Racine & Kenosha Country Clubs.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, February 3, 2015 at 6:00 pm in St. Joseph Catholic Church, 1533 Erie Street in Racine, with Rev. Steve Varghese and Rev. Matthew Phelan officiating.  Private entombment will take place in Calvary Cemetery Garden Crypts. Visitation will be in the church on Tuesday from 4:00 – 6:00 pm. Memorials can be directed to the "Rex Capwell Memorial Fund" to benefit several of the charities that Rex supported throughout his life.
