MOUNT PLEASANT – Richard J. Shortess, 87, passed away at Ascension All Saints on Sunday, February 27, 2022.

He was born in Neillsville, WI on October 24, 1934, the son of the late John Ralph and Dorothy (nee Decker) Shortess.   Dick faithfully served his country with the US Army during the Korean War.

On October 19, 1957, he married Nancy Ruth Borths in Marinette, WI.

Dick retired from JI Case with over 30 years of service and was a longtime, active member of Lutheran Church of the Redeemer.  An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed spending time at his cabin in the UP, fishing, hunting, and snowmobiling.  He and Nancy were also snowbirds in New Smyrna Beach, Florida.

In addition to his wife Nancy, Dick is survived by his four sons, Jeffrey (Kimberly) Shortess, David (Judith) Shortess, Thomas (Gayle) Shortess, and Gary (Tamara) Shortess; his grandchildren and great grandchildren, Jared (Courtney) Shortess and their daughters, Bailey and Nora; Jenna (Ryan) Tessmann and their daughters, Morgan and Mia; Kayla (Josh) Hove and their daughter, Hannah; Kyle Shortess; Krista (Jeremy) Shortess, and their daughter, Nova; Andrea (Brock) Buttles, Kathlyn Shortess, Nathaniel (Michelle) Shortess, Benjamin Shortess, and Leianna Shortess; his brother, Larry (Yvonne) Shortess; his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Fred Klaar, Marge Schlegel, Sharon (Sherwin) Wilson, James (Judy) Borths ; as well as many dear nieces and nephews.   Dick was also preceded in death by his sister, Shirley Klaar; his sister-in-law, Jana Shortess and his brother-in-law, George Schlegel.

Family and friends are invited to meet in the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer (2417 Drexel Ave) on Monday, March 7, 2022, for a visitation from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. A service celebrating his life will follow at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Matt James officiating and will conclude with Military Honors. MASKS ARE REQUIRED IN CHURCH . A service celebrating his life will follow at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Matt James officiating and will conclude with Military Honors.   MASKS ARE REQUIRED IN CHURCH.

A private interment will take place at the Southern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
