Robert John
Kohel
Jan 11, 1954 — May 20, 2026
Robert John Kohel, 72, passed away peacefully on May 20, 2026. Born in Racine on January 11, 1954, Robert was the beloved son of Donald and Lois Kohel.
A proud graduate of St. Catherine's High School, Robert spent his entire career behind the bar, where his adored personality and welcoming spirit made him a friend to countless people throughout the community. He was especially proud to have owned Russ's Tap for more than 18 years, creating not just a neighborhood establishment, but a place where stories were shared, friendships were built, and people felt at home.
On March 24, 2014, Robert married the love of his life, Cindy (nee: Nelson) Kohel. Together they shared many years filled with laughter, love and companionship.
Robert had a special place in his heart for the outdoors and treasured the many years he spent in Door County on Kangaroo Lake, where some of his happiest memories were made with family and friends. Whether he was fishing on the water, golfing with his friends, or enjoying a peaceful day by the lake, he found joy in life's simple pleasures.
He was an avid fan of the Chicago Cubs and the Green Bay Packers, rarely missing a game and always cheering passionately for his teams. Robert also loved bowling and took great pride in caring for his lawn. Friends and family knew how serious he was about keeping the grass perfectly cut, the edges straight, and the lines in the lawn just right. Many could recall him leaving work with a smile and his familiar phrase, "Time to go cut the grass."
Robert is survived by his loving wife, Cindy Kohel; his daughters, Kimberly Kohel, Sadie Kohel, Allie (Carlos) Kohel, Linea McCluskey, and Jodi (Dan) Wise; his cherished grandchildren, Cassandra Zertuche, Dion Gosa, Tatiana Harris, Makayla Sparkman, Javion Berryhill, Keanna Banks, Leathan Anguiano, Alexa (Jon) McCluskey, Jenna McCluskey, Quentin Bell, Jaxon Wise, and Juliana Wise; and his great-grandchildren, Asher Gosa, Kacey Ozier, Tru Hand, and Lakely Nitz. He is also survived by his sisters, Marybeth (Steve) Seitz and Pam (Ken) Gross; and his brothers, Bill Kohel and Jim (Denise) Kohel; and his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law; Sharon Nelson, Kara (Bruce) Toutant, Steve (Rita) Nelson and Mike Nelson.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Lois Kohel.
