RACINE – Sophie passed away peacefully on February 28, after a life she might now say was too long.

If only one word could be used to describe Sophie Woitach it might be ' giver' . She was many others: independent, determined, and warm are just a few.

A lifelong resident of Racine, Sophie married her husband, Joseph, and together, owned two grocery stores, Joe's IGA Market on Jay Eye See Ave and later North Main Superette, a neighborhood of other young families who became life-long friends.

Their three children, Mary Lou, Joseph and Gregory learned first hand through working at the store the many ways Sophie was generous with her time and skills teaching them life's lessons.

A member of St. Stanislaus for many years and then St. Lucy Catholic Church, Sophie volunteered many hours of her time. With retirement, came more opportunities and her love for card games. She became an avid knitter, making hats, socks, fleece blankets, towels, and more to give to her grandchildren and friends. With her constant companion, the radio, Sophie kept up with current events, listening to anything that held her attention.

She loved her family and ultimately would like them to treasure the vivid memories she shared in her unique way, each time feeling like it was the first time she was telling it.

Some might say that all that giving has amounted to the best gift of all. For her family and friends, they'll have memories to recount, and for her, well, she has eternity before her in a wonderful place.

Surviving are her three children Mary Louise Korzilius, Joseph (Mary) Woitach, and (the late Gregory) Pat Woitach, 14 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, 1 brother-in-law and many nieces and nephews.

Those waiting in heaven for her are her son Gregory, son-in-law Ken Korzilius, 2 sisters, 4 brothers and 1 sister-in-law and 3 brother-in laws.

Family and friends are invited to meet at St. Lucy Catholic Church (3101 Drexel Ave.) on Thursday, March 3, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. for the celebration of Sophie's life and funeral Mass with Rev. Mark R. Jones officiating.  There will be a visitation in the church from 10-11a.m.  A private interment will take place at the Holy Cross Cemetery Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers memorials to St. Lucy School or St. Catherine's would be appreciated.

Sophie's family extends a "Special Thank You" to all the care support staff at Lake Shore Manor for the generous comfort she was provided during her stay the past few months.
