With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved brother and son, Thomas Charles McCalmont, on December 27th, 2024. Born in the summer of 1969 amidst the Summer of Love and the first moon landing, Tom touched many lives with his limitless energy, passion for life, spontaneity, and mischievous sense of humor. He passed away at peace, surrounded by family.
Tom was always busy. Even as a child, he had a paper route, played the saxophone and drums, built countless forts in and out of doors, and participated in many activities including Boy Scouts, swimming lessons, wrestling, marching in travelling drum and bugle corps, plotting pranks against his two sisters, or helping his dad work on rental units and his grandpa farm or work in the shop. He loved being outdoors whether at work or play, especially fixing anything with a motor. When he wasn’t working, Tom enjoyed four-wheeling, camping, rafting, fishing, cooking out with friends and neighbors, planning funny jokes and escapades, watching old westerns, building aquascapes and fish tank configurations, and listening to rock and roll. Sharing stories, some partially true, and cooking, nearly as good as his sister, were among his favorite pastimes. He used his creative talents and strong work ethic throughout his 40 year career, first as a chef and restaurant co-owner of the Longbranch Restaurant in Hinton, Iowa, then later in building maintenance /property management in the greater Omaha, NE area, and finally to make functional art from recycled materials. His hand carved walking sticks and other unique art pieces showcase his ingenuity and strong values of stewardship and creativity: “Using what we have on hand rather than buying a bunch of crap we don’t need” was a common and honorable sentiment of Tom’s and underpinned nearly everything he ever did.
Tom is preceded in death by his mother Eileen and his half-brother Matthew. He leaves behind his father Michael, two loving sisters, Terri and Kelly, four deeply cherished daughters, Sydney, Hannah (Kyle), Emma, and Olivia; three grandchildren, Ellie, Jackson, and Mya; aunts, uncles, nieces, cousins, and many dear friends; the kind who would drop anything to help a person in need, and did so for Tom in the hours which counted most. I would like to Thank Tom for giving me a beautiful daughter. We were very young and only got to know each other more in 2021. His family was very important to him. All family members have been very good to Sydney as well. He is in peace. He will always be a part of my heart because of our daughter.
