
Racine- Edwin Robert “Bob” Dermody, 87, passed away unexpectedly at his home on Saturday, April 22, 2006. A lifetime resident, Bob was born in Racine on October 29, 1918 to the late Edwin R. and Mabel C. (nee: Clutter) Dermody. Baptized at St. Rose Catholic Church, he attended the Howell, Winslow, Franklin and Washington Park Schools. Bob proudly served our Country with the border patrol of the 14th Calvary Regiment from 1939-1942. He also served with the United States Army, B Company 14th Tank Battalion during WWII. Disabled after being shot by the enemy on Christmas Day of 1944, Bob was honorably discharged in September 1945. In 1946, Bob met the love of his life, Anna Mae Rothering. They were united in marriage on Thanksgiving Day, November 26, 1946 in St. Rose Catholic Church. Ann died on April 12, 2001. Bob was employed by various companies throughout his career including The Journal Times, Harvey Drop Forge, and Miller’s Flowers. However, in 1953 Bob began employment at Twin Disc as a machine repairman from where he retired on June 30, 1981. At age 50, he successfully fulfilled his dream of becoming a pilot and owning his own plane. Bob enjoyed his positions as regional director and wing leader of Ercoupe, a worldwide aircraft club. He was the recipient of the Fred Weick Award as well as several other awards for his dedication to Ercoupe flying. He flew until he was age 75. Bob also enjoyed golfing, belonging to the Ives Grove Senior League. Bowling was a major love of his life. He bowled in many local and traveling leagues, served on the board of directors of the Racine Bowling Assn., was a junior coach/instructor, and was inducted into the 1986 Racine Bowling Hall of Fame. Bob and Ann also liked to travel, especially to their favorite place, Walt Disney World. Above all, he was a devoted husband and father, who always put his family first. Surviving are his beloved daughter and son-in-law, Sheila and Robert Gamble; loving grandchildren, Greg (Pam) Gamble and Sharilyn (Brandon) Kapellusch; cherished great-grandchildren, Tyler and Emily Gamble; Corinne, Cody and Cailey Kapellusch; brother, James Larsen; sister, Virginia “Nicki” Grise; sister-in-law, Helen Rothering; and by many special nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends too numerous to mention by name. Funeral services for Bob will be held in the funeral home, 4600 County Line Rd., on Thursday, April 27, 2006 at 10:30 am with Rev. Robert Konkel, OFM officiating. Interment, with military honors, will follow in West Lawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be in the funeral home on Wednesday from 5-8 pm and on Thursday from 9:30-10:30 am. In memory of Bob, memorials to Hospice Alliance are encouraged.
