
Romayne M. Szuhai, 88, passed away at Froedtert Memorial Hospital on Saturday, July 21, 2007. She was born in Racine on Nov. 8, 1918, the daughter of the late Harry and Mamie (nee: Pfeiffer) Hegeman. On June 17, 1939, here in Racine, she was united in marriage with Steve Szuhai, who preceded her in death in 1983. She had been employed as chief bookkeeper for her father’s business, Decorators Supply House, for over 50 years and by the Racine County Juvenile Center for 15 years. She was very active on the family farm where she drove her own pony cart and nursed several horses back to health. Mrs. Szuhai trained and handled many dogs. She loved to travel and spend times in the casinos with her gambling buddies; Kay, Beth and Don. At age 60 she started taking judo lessons and earned her Brown Belt. She competed and officiated in many tournaments both local and nationally. Surviving are her children, Kathleen Ross of Racine, Jackai Szuhai of Somers, Elizabeth (Don) Goll, Alice Szuhai, Steve (Debbie) Szuhai; son-in-law Jack Garbo all of Racine; grandchildren, Lori Ross, Greg (Ruby) Ross, Glen (Debbie) Ross, Sally (Jim) Wedde, Robert (Nancy) Garbo, Elizabeth Garbo, Jenni (Steve) Mai, Keri Haney; great grandchildren, Chris, Robin, Garrett, Nick, Judi, Angie, Andy, Zac, John, Nate and Dylan; sisters Jeanette “Jane” Nelson and Edwina Rybarik both of Racine; special friends including the “Lunch Bunch”, her daughters, as well as, Jane, Elaine, Jim, Fran, Monica, JoAnne. Her nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends further survive her. In addition to her parents and her beloved husband, she was also preceded in death by her daughter Shirley Garbo, son-in-law Ken Ross; bothers and sisters, Cecelia Zenner, Alma Hess, Henry Hegeman, Adelaide Feest, and Joe Hegeman, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Richard Nelson, Frank Zenner, Lloyd Hess, Mel Feest, John Rybarik, LaVerne Hegeman and Mary Hegeman. Her Funeral Service will be held in the funeral home on Thursday, July 26th, at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery Hwy 32. Visitation will be in the funeral home on Wednesday from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. and on Thursday morning from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the Service. The family would like to thank the nurses and the entire staff of the Surgical I.C.U. at Froedtert Memorial Hospital for the care and compassion shown Romayne and her family.
