John Mayfield

vet
Sep 22, 1923 – Apr 20, 2013

Racine – John Mayfield, 90, affectionately known as “Uncle Bud”, received the promise of eternal life on Saturday, April 20, 2013.  He was born the youngest of ten children in Crockett County, Tennessee, on September 23, 1922, son of the late Paul and Mattie (nee: Fisher) Mayfield.

John was united in marriage to Edna Olivia (nee: Barkley) Mayfield on September 18, 1974.  Edna preceded him in death on January 14, 2005.

John honorably and faithfully served his country in the United States Army. He was a factory worker for JI Case until his retirement in 1989.  He was a member of Wayman AME Church and was a Mason.  John loved to be around people and tell tall stories.  He was the “Sly Fox”.  John will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

John leaves to cherish his memory, his sons, Brian of Peoria, IL, Herbert of Janesville; sister-in-law, Mittie Mayfield of Racine; special great-nephew, Lloyd “DeeDee” Brooks of Racine; step-daughters, Rosa M. Harper of Milwaukee, Theresa (Harold) Crayton-McClellon of Chicago; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.  In addition to his parents and wife, Edna, John is preceded in death by three brothers and six sisters.

A celebration of John’s life will take place on Thursday, April 25, 2013, 11:00am, at Wayman AME Church, 424 N. Memorial Drive, with Rev. Ernest G. Garrison officiating.  Visitation will be from 10:00am until the time of the service.  Burial with military honors will follow at West Lawn Memorial Park.
