Vera Miller

Aug 16, 1936 – Mar 15, 2014

RALEIGH, NC (FORMERLY OF RACINE) – Vera Miller passed away Saturday, March 15, 2014 at Rex Healthcare in Raleigh, NC.

She was born to the late Louise McLain and Willie H. Barney on August 16, 1936 in Meridian, MS. She lived in Racine, Wisconsin from 1952 – 2009, then moved to Raleigh to live with her eldest daughter and her family. Her working career included employment at St. Mary's Hospital and Wisconsin Electric in Racine and then over 25 years with Daimler-Chrysler (formerly American Motors).  Work-related injury forced her retirement in 1991.

Vera was the consummate Christian woman. Church and family were her top priorities. Her passion was caring for others: she would provide meals, shelter, companionship, encouragement or whatever else was needed.  Her zeal in service was matched by her enthusiastic participation in the activities of her church.  Whether it was Sunday school, morning worship, song service, evening worship, lectureships or gospel meetings, she would be there with children in tow.

Vera was always impeccably dressed, and this was simply an outer manifestation of her inner elegance.  Most important was her love for the Lord. She loved to read her Bible and listen to Gospel tapes.  This verse from 1 Timothy 5:10 clearly states the character of this excellent woman:

"…the wife of one man, having a reputation for good works; she has brought up children, has shown hospitality to strangers, has washed the saints' feet, has assisted those  in distress, and has devoted herself to every good work."

We are all richer for having known her, and poorer now that she is no longer with us.  But we know she is rejoicing today, having already heard the words of her Master:  "Well done, thou good and faithful servant.  Enter into the joy of your Lord."

She leaves to cherish her memories; her children; Vicky (Stephen) Coerper of Raleigh, NC, Kenneth Miller of Houston, TX, Janice Miller of Raleigh, NC, Monica (Michael) Bailey of Philadelphia, PA, her aunt Ola Johnson, of Racine, WI, and a host of Grandchildren, Great-Grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. Vera is preceded in death by her husband, David Miller, her parents, Ernest and Louise McLain, and Willie H. Barney, her son, Ronnie Miller, her grandson, LeQuan Gandy, her sisters, Claudia Mae Jackson, and Willie Mae Jackson, and her brother, Harold Ward.

Family and friends are invited to meet at Draeger-Langendorf Funeral Home on Thursday evening from 5-7 p.m. for a visitation.  The celebration of Vera’s life and Homegoing will take place at Midtown Church (1704 13th St) on Friday, March 28, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. with a visitation from 10-11 a.m.  Her interment will follow at Graceland Cemetery.

Should friends desire, contributions in Memory of Vera Miller, may be sent to The Michael J. Fox Foundation For Parkinson's Research by phoning 1-800-708-76441-800-708-76441-800-708-76441-800-708-7644, or by printing the donation form at https://www.michaeljfox.org/get-involved/donation.html and mailing it to The Michael J. Our thoughts and prayers are with The Miller Family. Sis. Vera Miller was such a wonderful Christian example of kindness, compassion, service, and love. She had a beautiful smile and spirit that warmed your heart anytime she greeted and gave you a hug. It was always delightful that when you would see Sis. Miller then you would see Sis. Jean Boutwell only a few feet away and vice versa. Seeing them together was like seeing a “cheery christian” version of “Lucy and Ethel”:)! Sis. Miller will be truly missed. May the Lord and bless and keep you all with His love and infinite mercy.
