MOUNT PLEASANT – Harold William Martenas, 97, passed away at Home Inspired Senior Living in Somers, WI, on December 29, 2017.
Harold was born in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania, on January 9, 1920, to Ray and Nora (Huntington) Martenas. He was raised at the Tressler Orphan’s Home in Loysville, Pennsylvania, from age two until his graduation from high school there in 1938. At Tressler, Harold developed his musical and athletic talents and learned the printing trade.
Harold served in the Air Transport Command of the Army Air Force during WWII from 1942-45. During this period he was stationed for 18 months in Cairo, Egypt, where he serviced aircraft bound for China. After the war, Harold was a linotype operator at the Gettysburg Times until moving to Racine, where he was employed by the Racine Journal Times for 33 years, retiring in 1983.
Harold’s was a long life, well-lived. He was a devoted family man—much loved for his gentle and nurturing disposition and celebrated for his exceptional pies. He was a lover of golf, the Milwaukee Brewers, and the Green Bay Packers. He enjoyed reading, music, jigsaw puzzles, games, and cards—especially bridge and cribbage. In retirement, he was a long-time volunteer at Toys for Tots. In 2010 he participated in an Honor Flight to Washington D. C.
Harold was a faithful member of Atonement (now Living Faith) Lutheran Church since 1950 and lent his ardent voice to the choir for many years.
Harold will be dearly missed and his memory cherished by his daughter Sandra (Tom) Fugate, son Jeffrey (Kathy) Marten; grandchildren Devin (Ermelinda) Brosseau, and Brent, Stephanie (James Koepke), and Cory (Holly) Marten; step-grandson Daniel Wood; and great-grandchildren Cassius, Izabella, Reed and Holden. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Marcella Alwine, in 1949, and by Martha Raffensperger, his wife of 51 years, in 2002.
Private interment will take place at West Lawn Memorial Park. A celebration of Harold’s life will be held on Saturday, January 6, 2018, 11:00 am, at Living Faith Lutheran Church, 2915 Wright Avenue, with the Rev. Warren Williams and the Rev. Denise Mbise officiating. Visitation will be prior to the service, from 10—11:00. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Living Faith Church, the Mt. Meru Tumaini Health Clinic (Tanzania mission project), or Honor Flight are suggested.
The family wishes to express its gratitude to the staffs at Ascension Hospice and Home Inspired Senior Living for their compassionate care.
