MOUNT PLEASANT – Neil Wayne Hutchinson, 87, died peacefully at home in his own bed with his puppy dog, Molly snuggled close by. He was also with his son Michael who cared for him during his last months.
Neil was born in Lena, Wisconsin on November 19, 1929 to Ernest and Georgiana (Belongia) Hutchinson. At age 2 he became a Racine resident and graduated from Washington Park High School in 1948. One month later he joined the army. He served in Korea until 1952. In July of 1950 he served in the 63rd artillery, 24th Division, in an advanced party of 886 men. By the end of July only six men survived including Neil. At that time they were taken as a prisoner of war. They were captured for 3 weeks and escaped. After that he joined the 11th field artillery. He retired as a staff sergeant with an honorable distinguished service discharge. He received a Bronze Star, a Prisoner of War medal; as well as other medals of good conduct. Neil was a proud soldier and a proud American.
He married the former Kathleen Mann in 1953. They were married for 65 years and had five children. He was a tool and die maker and retired from American Motors/Chrysler. He was an avid hunter and fisherman.
He was preceded in death by his father Ernest (Minnie) Hutchinson; his mother, Georgiana (Austin) Standiford; his brother, Ernie “Sonny” (Patricia) Hutchinson; his daughter, Sandra Jean (in 1969); his son, John (in 2016); his granddaughter, Megan; his nephew Danny Hutchinson; his mother-in-law, Mary Mann; as well as by many precious dogs, to name a few: Duchess, Peggy, Whiskers, Sparky, Starsky, and Tia. They are all jumping all over him right now!
He is survived by his wife, Kathleen; his daughter Mary Day; his sons, Casey (Judy) and Michael; his six grandchildren; three great grandchildren; his sister, Linda (John) Mini; his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Paul and Mary Ellen Kaster; as well as many nieces and nephews and friends; and his puppy, Molly. Many thanks to very special neighbor and friend, Roddy Phelps, for all he has done for Neil.
Per Neil’s wishes there will be no services at this time. A service honoring his life and military service will be held in the spring at the Southern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery. An announcement will be made when it has been established. Memorials in Neil’s name have been suggested to any veterans groups of your choice.
