Racine – Mercedes Ann (nee: Schuit) Kennedy, age 90; affectionately known to many as “Cena”; passed away peacefully at home early Monday morning, July 16, 2018, surrounded with the love of family.

A lifetime resident, Mercedes was born in Racine on November 20, 1927 to the late Jacob and Alvina (nee: LeMay) Schuit. She was a graduate of Saint Catherine’s High School. On February 15, 1947 in St. Patrick Catholic Church, she was united in marriage with the love of her life, Jerome J. Kennedy, who preceded her in death on December 2, 2007.

Mercedes was a longtime member of St. Lucy Catholic Church. Among her interests, she enjoyed reading, bowling and golfing – having been awarded Senior State Champion for her age group. She was an avid Packers and Brewers fan. Above all, Cena loved and cherished spending time with her entire family.

Surviving are her children, Susan Donaldson, Jerome (Lynel) Kennedy, Jr., Karen (Louis) Mako and Kathleen (Glenn) Gutnayer; grandchildren, Michael (Andrea) Donaldson, Daniel Donaldson, Kelly (Chris) Leu, Kerry (Ryan) Taylor, Amy (Daina Skrove) Mako, Sandi (Tony) Kontny, Laura (Josh) Lange, Lindsay (Austin Potrikus) Kennedy, Rebecca (Jacob) Hensch, Daniel Gutnayer and Cara Gutnayer; great-grandchildren, Thomas and Keira Taylor; Alexandria Kontny, Ruby Mako; Noah, Lily and Anna Lange; Nicholas and Amelia Donaldson; Hannah Donaldson; Jackson and Charlotte Hensch; brother, Robert (Marge) Schuit; sister-in-law, Betty Schuit; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends – too numerous to mention all by name.

In addition to her parents and husband, Cena was preceded in death by her beloved sons, Thomas and Patrick Kennedy; brothers, Jake Schuit, Vincent (Betty) Schuit and Richard (Shirley) Schuit; brother-in-law, Thomas Kennedy; and sisters-in-law, Mary Lou (Don) Fritchen, Mildred (William) Fabish and Ruth (Howard) Cook.

A special note of thanks to Dr. Mark DeCheck for the many years of medical care and friendship and to Hospice Alliance, Inc. (especially nurses, Sara and Erica) for the compassionate support given in Cena’s time of need. May God bless all of you!
