Betty C. Thomson

Sep 7, 1922 – Jul 11, 2008

Betty C. Thomson, 85, passed away in the Becker Shoop Center, on Friday, July 12, 2008. She was born in Missoula, MT on Sept. 7, 1922 the daughter of the late John and Caroline (nee: Lawrence) Holmes. Betty graduated from Montana State University and taught home economics in Missoula until moving to Detroit where she was employed by the Edison Company. It was in Detroit that she met Jack Thomson. On Sept. 7, 1946 they were married. Jack preceded her in death on August 22, 1982. Shortly after the birth of their second child Betty was struck with polio. It was a difficult time for the family with a young mother being so ill. Her strength and courage helped her over come this obstacle in life. Betty was a faithful and active member of Christ Church United Methodist. At the church she was a member of the Quilting Group, the Bible Study Group, and the United Methodist Women. Surviving are her children, Cindy (Phil) Thompson of Delaware, OH, Carol Gavigan, Nancy Thomson and James Thomson all of Racine; 6 grandchildren, Peter (Andrea) Thompson of Powell, OH, Scott (Diane) Thompson of Delaware, OH, Jeffrey (Suzanne) Thompson of Lewis Center, OH, Daniel Gavigan of Racine, Katie (Jeffrey) Oldenburg of Milwaukee, and David Gavigan of Greenfield, WI; 5 great grandchildren (with two more on the way). Her nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends further survive her. In addition to her parents and beloved husband, her brother Paul Holmes and her sister Phyllis Gilman preceded Betty in death. Her Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday July 19th, in Christ Church United Methodist, 5109 Washington Ave., with Rev. Awilda Nolla officiating. Visitation will be in the church on Friday from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. and on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service. The family has suggested memorials to either Christ Church United Methodist or Special Olympics.
