Clarence "Cunnel" Johnson

May 28, 1924 – Aug 22, 2009

Mr. Clarence “Cunnel” Johnson, 85, died at Harmony of Kenosha on Saturday, August 22, 2009. A lifetime resident of Racine, Cunnel was born on May 28, 1924 to Iver and Amanda Louise (Erickson) Johnson. He graduated from Washington Park High School and faithfully served his nation with the U.S. Army during WWII in the European theater. On January 17, 1948, he married the former Jean Elizabeth Kramer. His heart was broken when she died on January 5, 2007. Cunnel had been a member of Zion Lutheran Church since baptism. He worked for Racine Unified School District for over 38 years before retiring. In his younger years he was an avid baseball player. He later replaced baseball with golf. His greatest joy, however, came from being in the surroundings of his family. His survivors include his children, Carol Sarabia of Madison, David (Tenley) Johnson of Chisago, MN; grandchildren, Robin Sarabia of Miami, FL, Heather Sarabia of Madison, Tom (Rebecca) Johnson of Rapid City, South Dakota, Andrew Johnson of Sheridan, WY, Tim Johnson of Chisago, MN.; sisters-in-law, Joan Johnson, Bev Johnson and Carol Freier all of Racine; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, Jean, Cunnel was also preceded in death by his son, Thomas who died at the age of four; his brothers, Carl, Walter and Al Johnson and sister, Alice Luce. A service celebrating Cunnel’s life and funeral will take place in Zion Lutheran Church (3805 Kinzie Ave.) at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, August 28, 2009 with Rev. Pam Kerschner officiating. Burial will follow next to his loving wife and son at Graceland Cemetery. There will be a visitation in the church from 11:00 a.m. until 12 p.m. Memorials have been suggested to Zion Lutheran Church.

    Carol and David,

I was was very sad to hear about your dad. I have fond memories of both him and your mom – like the time the Zion Luther Leaguers made Christmas wreathes at your house as a fund raiser. I will miss talking to him when I visit my mom (Audrey Fox) in Racine.

My daughter Laura also sends her condolences. She remembers him as the “tall, nice looking, very friendly man from Zion”. When she visited Racine, he would always take the time to chat with her after church.

Your parents were truly nice people and will be missed by many. I feel blessed that I knew them.

My thoughts are with you. Take care,

    Jane
