Mr. Sweeney was the principal when I taught at Jefferson School in the early 70s. He was honest, upright and caring; the children respected him as did the parents. He stood behind us when we needed support and encouraged us to perform at our best. He walked through our rooms as we were instructing, he checked our lesson plans weekly and he made sure we were teaching according to the curriculum. When he was promoted to a position at the central office, he requested that he return to the schools and, for many years, functioned as a principal where he could interact with the students and serve as a “father figure,”

Working side by side with Mr. Sweeney, we learned how to handle troublesome situations, to conduct ourselves professionally, and to speak well of our school and our youthful charges. Each day was an adventure, often a challenge but no matter what took place, we knew always that he had our back.

Never again was I able to encounter such a fine administrator and I am eternally grateful to have taught and learned under him. Rest in peace, Mr. Sweeney.

    Mary Murdoch

You and my husband, Norb, were great friends. In fact, we chose you to be my daughter, Sandy’s Godfather when she was baptized and you graciously accepted. My husband was a carpenter and he has put a few nails in your property by the lake. He enjoyed several weekends with you at your place which we called Sweeney’s Folly. Our family was able to enjoy several trips to your place on the lake and our children loved the lake and sleeping in the loft. You also were a great cook. One of my daughters is now teaching at your school, Wadewitz. You will be greatly missed but enjoy your time with Norb in Heaven. Prayers and thanks, Vonnie Kis

I attended Wadewitz elementary school where Mr. Sweeney was the principal. I visited a few times since becoming an adult and always asked about the staff that was there back then. He was a fair and funny administrator. Sending my condolences to his family and loved ones.
