Racine – Herbert L. Smith, 91, affectionately known to many as “Smitty” or “Stub”, passed away at Wheaton Franciscan – All Saints Medical Center on Wednesday, April 28, 2010. A lifetime resident, Herb was born in Racine on December 12, 1918 to the late James and Mary (nee: Montanaco, Sasso) Smith. A 1935 graduate of Washington Park High School, he faithfully served our Country for over five years with the United States Army 135th Medical Division in the South Pacific. On December 24, 1941 in St. Mary Catholic Church, Herb was united in marriage with the love of his life, Pearl Arlene (nee: Christiansen). Upon his return from service, Herb began a longtime career as a letter carrier with the US Postal Service, retiring in 1976. While still at the Post Office, Herb and Pearl, worked together in the evenings at Manpower -servicing SC Johnson Wax. In retirement, Herb went to work for his brother-in-law’s company, Racine Railroad Products, until 1985. Herb was a devoted member of St. Lucy Catholic Church, where he served as a 7:30 pm Mass usher. Among his interests, he enjoyed golfing, bowling, tending to their yard, and visiting with friends at several local restaurants. Above all, he was completely and whole-heartedly devoted to his wife and family. Surviving are his loving wife of nearly 69 years, Pearl; their daughter and son-in-law, Ann and Gary Johnson; grandsons, Craig and Steven Johnson; close friend of Herb and Pearl, Barb Dupuis; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends too numerous to mention all by name. In addition to his parents, Herb was preceded in death by 5 brothers and 2 sisters. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, May 3, 2010 at 1:00 pm in St. Lucy Catholic Church, 3101 Drexel Ave., with Rev. Mark R. Jones and Rev. Cletus V. Uhen officiating. Interment, with military honors, will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery, Hwy 32. Visitation will be in the funeral home on Sunday from 4-6 pm and in the church on Monday from 12 noon – 1 pm. In memory of Herb, memorials to St. Lucy Church have been suggested. A special note of thanks to Dr. Thomas E. Goodrich and the entire staff of WFH-All Saints for the compassionate care and support given to Herb in his time of need. May God bless all of you!
