Mrs. Barber, 71, passed away, unexpectedly, at her residence on Tuesday, March 28, 2006. She was born in Racine on December 3, 1934, the daughter of the late Wilbert and Priscilla (nee: Malcom) Gregory. On November 5, 1954, here in Racine, she was united in marriage to Jerome Barber, who preceded her in death on Nov. 14, 1994. She had been employed by Kohl’s Food Store and later by Wal-Mart, where she was a four star checker. Mrs. Barber was a member of St. Sebastian Catholic Church. She loved her husband Jerry for more than forty years. Jean loved her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was an avid Cubs and Bears fan. She shared her love of sports with her family. Jean had a gift for gab and loved to tell jokes, Her great-grandchildren referred to her as “Grandma Wal-Mart”; she was so proud of that. Wal-Mart was Jean’s extended family, she said it was her second home. We are at peace knowing she’s in Heaven with Jerry, the love of her life. Surviving are her children, Kirk (Susan) Barber of Kansasville, Kim (James) Marcotte and Karee Barber, all of Racine; 8 grandchildren Jason (Stephanie) Barber, Jerrid Barber, Sara Reed (Joseph Harmon), Carrie Ann Reed (Chris Braun), Kelly Reed (Riley Weidner), Suzie (Wade) Towers, and Dylan Pogorzelski and Matthew Marcotte (Courtney Enselman); 15 great grandchildren, her brother Gerald “Gus” Gregory; sister-in-law Helen Gregory, both in Racine; brothers-in-law Morris Ervin and Dick Fischer. She is further survived by her nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by 5 sisters and a brother. Her Memorial Funeral Mass will be held in St. Sebastian Catholic Church, 3030-95th St., Sturtevant, at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, with Rev. Robert Konkol OFM officiating. Visitation will be in the Church from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the Mass. The family has suggested memorials to St. Sebastian Catholic Church. The family would like to thank Doris and the many other friends Jean worked with at Wal-Mart; as well as the many customers that would wait longer in her line just to talk with her. That’s what helped get through the last years of her life.
