Racine- Jean Marie (nee: Allen) Acklam, 85, passed away at the Ridgewood Care Center on Saturday, February 10, 2007 following a brief, yet spirited, battle with cancer. A lifetime Racine County resident, Jean was born in Burlington on January 14, 1922 to the late William and Elizabeth (nee: Hempsted) Allen. A graduate of Washington Park High School, she went on to proudly serve our Country as a Sergeant with the Women’s Army Corps in WWII. On January 11, 1945 in Riverside, CA, she was united in marriage to Roland Harold Acklam. Tragically, he died in an automobile accident, while traveling with Jean and their son, on August 12, 1962. Jean was employed as a supervising operator at AT&T for over 18 years, retiring in 1987. She was a faithful member of St. Michael’s Episcopal Church. Jean enjoyed attending the telephone Pioneers outings; golfing, accomplishing a hole-in-one; bowling; and had tremendous luck at playing Bingo and casino slots. Above all, she loved and cherished being in the surroundings of her entire family. Surviving are her daughter, Sandra (Donald) Doebereiner; son, James Acklam, both of Racine; grandchildren, Scott Doebereiner, Steven (Heather) Doebereiner, Tyler Acklam and Nolan Acklam; great-grandchildren, Alexia, Conner and Ethan Doebereiner; sisters-in-law, Dorothy Grant, Marilyn Acklam, and Lois (Harry) Jacobson; and her loyal friends, MaryLou and Jack Manalli; and Jan and Buck Jenkins; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. In addition to her parents and husband, Jean was preceded in death by her sisters, Edith (Donald) Peterson and Helen (Mike) Principe; brothers, Charles (Florence) (Marge) Allen and Ralph (Libby) Allen; in-laws, Jesse and Marie Acklam, Sr.; and by brothers-in-law, Donald Acklam, Jesse Acklam, Jr. and John Grant. Funeral services will be held at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church, 4701 N. Erie St., on Thursday, February 15, 2007 at 10 am with Rev. Terry McGugan officiating. Interment, with military honors, will follow at West Lawn Memorial Park. A reception will be held back at the church following the cemetery services. Visitation will be in the funeral home, 4600 County Line Rd., on Wednesday from 5-8 pm and in the church on Thursday from 9-10 am. In memory of Jean, memorials to her beloved St. Michael’s Church have been suggested. A special note of thanks to the entire staffs of Ridgewood Care Center and Hospice Alliance; and to Dr. Michael P. Mullane for the compassionate end-of-life care and support that was so warmly extended to Jean and to our family. God bless all of you!
