
Racine – John Earl Phelps, 60, passed away at Wheaton Franciscan Heathcare-Allsaints Hospital on Thursday, December 07, 2006. He was born in Columbia, Mississippi on January 19, 1946, the son of Marshall S. and Alice F. (nee: Carter) Phelps. John was a Racine resident for most of his life. John was a proud veteran of the US Army, serving three years of active duty from 1964-67. He was united in holy matrimony on August 22, 1981 to Kathleen Ann Herman in Holy Name Catholic Church.
John will be remembered most for the unconditional love he had for his family. He was a devoted husband, and a proud and loving father. He enjoyed traveling, especially to visit his family in Mississippi and Louisiana. He also liked hot rods, attending car shows, and drag races. John retired from Racine Unified School District in 1996, where he had worked as a stationary engineer in many of the schools.
He is survived by his wife, Kathleen; daughter and son-in-law Lisa and Wayne Raffelson of Racine; sisters, Patricia Hullum of Racine, Gwen (Robert) Mendoza, Cathy (Bryan LeBlanc) Phelps, and Debbie (Chad) Gros all of Thibodaux, Louisiana; brothers, Allen (Denise) Phelps of Thibodaux, and Steve (Michele) Beres of Lansing, Michigan; grandmother Vivian Bosak of Racine; aunt Betty Carter of Raymond, Mississippi; step-mother Bessie Voiron of Thibodaux; step-fathers Leo Beres of Racine, and Attie Puntillo of Kenosha; mother-in-law Anna Herman; sister-in-law Mary Herman both of Racine; and brother-in-law Howard (Julie) Herman of Eau Claire. He is further survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Both of his parents preceded him in death.
Funeral services will be held in the funeral home on Monday, December 11, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. Committal will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery (Hwy 32) with military honors. Visitation will be in the funeral home on Sunday, December 10, 2006 from 2-4 p.m., and on Monday from 10-11 a.m.
