LD Powell

Jan 13, 1965 – Dec 23, 2019

Service Details

Memorial Service: Saturday, January 18, 2019,  12:00pm

Location: OMI Conference Center, 6442 22nd Avenue, Kenosha, WI.

Visitation with the family: 11:00am – 12:00pm

Kenosha – LD Powell, age 54, made his transition on December 23, 2019. He was born on January 13, 1965 in Chicago, Illinois to LD Davis and Irene Powell.

LD received his formal education in the Chicago Public School System and when he relocated to Kenosha, Wisconsin he attended Lincoln Elementary, Lincoln Junior High School and Tremper High School.  While in high school he moved to Oklahoma where he graduated.

LD was employed by Monarch Plastics in Kenosha, WI and Parker Plastics in Pleasant Prairie, WI.  He loved singing, dancing, bowling, playing cards, shooting pool, playing dominoes and scrabble. LD would often talk about how proud he was of “his babies” Sytarra and Charles. He looked forward to spending time with his children and grandchildren, he wanted to develop a stronger bond with them.  Everyone knew how much LD enjoyed social gatherings, whether it was for the holidays, birthday celebrations or just spending quality time with his family and friends. LD couldn’t wait for the music to begin so that he could start his dancing and singing routine. He was not camera shy at all. He was once told that he had a voice that only God could love and his reply was “then I definitely got to keep on singing.” LD always dressed to impress. He learned this from watching his older brother Lucius at an early age. He wanted to be just like Lucius, the way he walked, talked and dressed. No matter what was going on LD or “Fat Fat” as his Mother often called him, would be dressed as if he was straight out of either the Jet or GQ Magazine. His sister Josette would sometimes ask him why he was dressed up with nowhere to go. That was just how LD was with his cool and suave demeanor always on display. His infectious warm smile coupled with his smooth charisma will definitely be missed by all who knew and loved him.

LD leaves behind to cherish his memory his children Sytarra Thompson and Charles (Rose) Cunningham; grandchildren Reginald Thompson, Reina Thompson, Royale Carter, Anaya Cunningham and Cali Cunningham; siblings Irene Powell-Gross, Gloristien Carr, Lucius Powell, Daisey Vaughn, Argusta (Alicia) Smith, Lucielle Powell, Gregory (Lucy) Powell and Josette (Joe) Powell; step sisters Janice Tucker, Phillis Ann (Eddie) Smith-Carter and Anita Satterfield; his longtime companion Annette “Josie” Brantley; 75 nieces and nephews; 220 great nieces and nephews; 95 great-great nieces and nephews (instead of calling  his nieces and nephews by name he made it real easy and called ALL of them “My Niece or My Nephew”); he is further survived by his close friends Ethan Moore and JoAnn Oliver.

LD was preceded in death by his mother Irene Powell; his father LD Davis; his sister Marie West; his brother Calvin Powell Sr. as well as his brothers-in-law Henry Gross Jr. and Walter Vaughn Sr.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, January 18, 2019,  12:00pm at OMI Conference Center, 6442 22nd Avenue, Kenosha, WI.  You’re invited to visit with the family from 11:00am until the time of service.
