Lucile Cooley McCarty Racine- Lucile Cooley McCarty, 94, was called Home to her Lord on Sunday, February 5, 2006. Mother McCarty was born in Ellisville, Mississippi on January 8, 1912 to the late Wallace and Bonnie (nee: Crosby) Cooley. Most of her life was spent as a resident of her beloved Mississippi. In 1995, she moved to Racine to be closer to her family. After the untimely death of her first husband, Quilly Cooley, Lucile was united in marriage to Gressie W. McCarty on March 16, 1946 and was his loving companion until his death on September 24, 1988. Mrs. McCarty was an usher and devoted member of St. John Missionary Baptist Church in Laurel, MS. She sang with numerous Gospel Quartets throughout the South. After moving to Racine, she attended New Omega Baptist Church. An extremely talented cook, she was employed at various restaurants in her lifetime and she enjoyed working for the Brush family in Laurel. However, her number one priority was her own family. Her family boasts that her cooking was nothing less than amazing. May her tireless hands now Rest in Peace. Even into her 90’s, Lucile’s memory was remarkable. She loved telling stories to family and friends about her most interesting and eventful life. Mother McCarty was a lovely, sweet, gentle and loving lady that everyone would want for a grandmother, was much loved and will be greatly missed. Surviving are her cherished children Melvina Cooley, Virginia Poole, Patricia Holloway and Leonard McCarty; sister, Mattie Harris; and sister-in-law, Willie B. Cooley. Many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive, too numerous to mention by name. In addition to her parents and husbands, Lucile was preceded in death by her children, Sonny Cooley, Cleveland Cooley, and Frederick McCarty and by other special relatives. A Homegoing Celebration will be held on Friday, February 10, 2006 at New Omega Baptist Church, 5731 Hwy 38, at 11 am with Rev. Fred L. Richmond officiating. Interment will follow in West Lawn Memorial Park. There will be a viewing at the church on Friday from 10-11 am. Memorial remembrances may be directed to Mrs. Virginia Poole (1616 Packard Ave. Racine, WI 53403 262-632-8360). A special thanks to granddaughter, Yvonne, for the tender loving care and attention given to Grandma.
