Mittie Lee (nee: Jones) Mayfield went home to her heavenly father on Wednesday, September 20, 2017. She was born July 9, 1927 in Greensboro, AL to Fannie Frison and Robert Jones

She was united in marriage to the late Curtis “Steve” Mayfield on June 29, 1963. Mittie worked for more than 30 years in Retail at JC Penney’s were she notably retired.  You could find her with a smiling face and a helping hand. If you shopped at Penney’s you were sure to know her.

Mittie found great pleasure in studying the bible, baking, and sewing. While she did not have kids of her own, she found an abundant amount of pleasure in laughing with her niece, great nieces and nephews and great great nieces and nephews as well as with other family members and several friends.  She was kind to all displaying a warm heart while being sassy and fussing a bit or a lot of bit.

Mittie joined St Paul Missionary Baptist Church in 1956 under the leadership of the Rev. J.B. Bailey and continued to serve the Lord faithfully under the leadership of Bishop Lawrence L. Kirby. She began serving as an Usher within one year after joining the church and became inducted into the National United Ushers Association of American, Inc. in 1976 as a lifetime member so you best believe she will be awaiting upon our arrival at the pearly gates of heaven waiting to usher us in.

Mittie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her sisters Bertha Garrett and Catherine Orange and brothers David Jones, Calvin Jones and Ned Jones. She leaves to cherish her memories to her niece Linda (Aubrey) Anderson.  Her great nephew Aubrey Anderson Jr.  Her great nieces Bridgette (Frank) Johnson, Audrey Anderson, and Maria Anderson. Her Brother-in-law Eugene Garrett and her sisters Eliza Woods, Clementine Lawson, Hertlene Smith and Ira Nell Geter.  Her brother Robert Jones and her godson Curtis Woods; as well as a host of many other family and friends who loved her dearly and she loved dearly as well.

A Celebration of Mittie’s life will be held on Thursday, September 28, 2017, 11:00am at St. Paul Baptist Church, 1123 Center St., in Racine, WI. The Visitation will be at the church from 10:00am until the time of service. Bishop Lawrence L. Kirby will be Officiating.  Interment will take place at West Lawn Memorial Park. Please visit the website at a later date for her full obituary.

Our deepest sympathy and prayers for the family of Mittie. Our mother Gloria Thornton was a good friend and coworker of Mittie’s way back when they worked together at JCPenney at the Elmwood Plaza. They saw each other on occasion and always had a wonderful time. Our mom’s been gone eight years now. Their memories are cherished forever in our hearts.

I will always remember Mittie from Penney’s, where my mom also worked. She always had a smile and was happy to see me, so I’d made a point of stopping to say hello. Wonderful memories of a wonderful woman!
