Mother Mary L. Scales-Hardin

Oct 23, 1933 – Jul 16, 2019

Service Details

Her Homegoing Service will be held in the Compassion Tabernacle United Holy Church of America, 2044 Mead St., on Wednesday, July 24th, at 11:00 a.m. with Elder John Smith-Host Pastor, Rev. Melvin Hargrove-Officiant. Visitation will be at the church on Wednesday, from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service.

Mary L. Scales-Hardin (nee: Jackson) was called home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, July 16, 2019 surrounded by her family at Ridgewood Care Center. Mary was born in Brownville, Tennessee, on October 23, 1933 to Vosquel and Effie Mae (nee: Nesbitt) Jackson.  She united in marriage in 1954 to Dan Scales Jr. in which they had 5 children from their union.  Mary was preceded in death by her first husband in 1965. Mary remarried in 1983 to the late Willie E. Hardin. Mother Mary was a God -fearing prayer warrior. She accepted Christ at a young age and was a faithful member of All Nation Pentecostal Church before spending a few years in Kokomo, Indiana. She found fellowship with Elder Milton Hall Jr. of Grace Memorial Institutional Church and later joined Compassion Tabernacle United, under the leadership of Pastor Smith until her health declined. Even in her final years she enjoyed Sunday service at Ridgewood Care Center.

Mother Mary leaves a life of joyous memories to her beloved children; Avis (Robert) Gamble, Jeffrey (Ashley) Scales, Gwen (Denory) Perry-Brye, Vivian Scales and preceding her in death, her youngest child, Daniel Scales.  Her thirteen grandchildren; Alex Scales, Allisia Stewart, Latisha Scales, Nathaniel (Gabrielle) Perry, Isiah Scales, Cherrelle Scales, Jeremy Gamble, Leah Mason, Adrian Gamble, Janelle Scales, Robert Lawson, and Camille and Kendall Scales.  Affectionately known as “Big Ma,” she also cherished eleven great grandchildren. In addition, she leaves fond memories to her beloved sister Marcella Shackelford, and in-laws Ada Scales, Mary Ann Taylor, Lillie B. Scales and Cliff Scales. Special cousins, Mable Upchurch and Ella Cartwright. Long time friends Mamie Jennings and Doris Stewart, and a host of other friends and acquaintances. Mary was preceded in death by her siblings; Quincy, Wayne Dee, Shirlene, and Pauline Jackson and in-laws; Lue Hatch, Mattie Lee Blake, Hattie Vaughn, Samella Black, Shelvel and Willie Lee Scales.

The Scales Family would like to send a special thank you for the care and support provided by Ridgewood Care Center staff, Richard Doss, RN and Seasons Hospice and Palliative Care.

Mother Mary was always a willing participant whenever Gregg Chapel was at Ridgewood for Bible Study. Anytime I ever shared with her she vocally demonstrated an abiding faith in God. Praying and knowing that God will comfort and strengthen your family.

Testimonials

October 22, 2015

Mike,
Words cannot adequately convey our gratitude for all you did to honor our family member and friend, Mert Fleury. Like with her husband Ray, years ago, you and your staff went above and beyond to help us through this difficult time and to give Mert a wonderful celebration of her life. Every detail was considered, all of our requests were given unfailing attention, and the little extras took our breath away. Every sad feeling and every tear was matched two-fold with feelings of gratitude and comfort because of what you did. We will be forever grateful!
The Fleury Family

David Fleury
