It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Myrna Kryger on Friday, August 29, 2025, following a twelve-year struggle with lung cancer.
Myrna was born on March 31, 1947, in Edgerton, Minnesota, to Elmer and Frieda (nee DenOuden) Muilenburg. Edgerton was a small, close-knit Dutch town, where she grew up with cousins who were as close to her as her siblings Marilyn and Norm.
She graduated from Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa, with a BA in Social Work, worked as a medical social worker in Marshfield, WI, and obtained an MSW from UW-Milwaukee. Having an adventurous streak, she branched out to Taiwan where she taught English to university students for fourteen months. Myrna moved to Racine in late 1979 and worked as a Clinical Social Worker at Lutheran Social Services and Family Service of Racine for nearly 35 years before retiring in 2014. Myrna’s devotion to the well-being of others went well beyond her 9-to-5 job as a therapist; her family and friends relied on her good counsel, her generosity of spirit, her kind heart, and her grounded steadiness under pressure throughout the years.
It took a while before a real Dutchman crossed her path, but she married Koos “Ko” Kryger in 1989 and became a devoted and loving stepmom to his sons Chad and Ben, a dear and respected mother-in-law to Tina and Gaya, and a beloved Oma to granddaughters Olivia and Reese. In addition, she was a dedicated host-mom to five foreign exchange daughters through Rotary International. Myrna was an avid reader and a long-time subscriber to the UW Foreign Film series. She took pride in her flower garden, maintained her close contacts with dear friends and relatives, enjoyed the annual cousin get-togethers and national and international travels with hubby Koos, and spent many happy weekends at their condo in Door County.
Myrna was preceded in death by her parents, parents-in-law, brother Norm, and grandson Vailan. She will be sorely missed by her husband Koos, her sister Marilyn Wilson, sons Chad (Tina) and Ben (Gaya), granddaughters Olivia and Reese, sister-in-law Marge Muilenburg, her best friend Linda Angel, her dear cousins Barb, Deb and Donn, her niece and nephews, and many other close relatives and friends, both in the USA and in the Netherlands.
The family wishes to recognize and express their appreciation to Dr. Mullane and Dr. Hassan and their team at the Aurora Oncology Department in Racine, and the caregivers at Hospice Alliance in Pleasant Prairie for their professional and compassionate care.
