KENOHSA – Dr. Ruth A. Fangmeier, 69, passed away on Tuesday, April 24, 2018.

She was born in Cleveland, OH on October 22, 1948, the daughter of the late Russell and Elsie (nee: Plitt) Fangmeier.

Ruth received her undergraduate degree in education from Bowling Green State University, her Masters in Social Work from Catholic University of America and her Doctorate in Social Work from Columbia University.  Ruth utilized her degrees to educate and assist the hearing and visually impaired.  She started her profession and ministry in Chicago working with people who are hearing impaired.  After her doctoral work, Ruth worked for the Lighthouse National Center for Vision and Aging in New York.

Ruth researched and taught in numerous colleges primarily in New York, Chicago and Washington, D.C.  However, her last position spanned 20 years with Carthage College where she developed many relationships with colleagues, staff and especially her students.

Ruth was a member of Mount Pleasant Lutheran Church in Racine.  Ruth will be remembered for her kindness and compassion toward others, her creativity, and her quick wit.    She will also be remembered for her love for quilting and knitting and her ceramic turkey collection.

She is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Rev. Tim (Rae) Fangmeier of Davidson, NC; her niece, Beth (Mike) Jordan of North Carolina; her nephew, Peter (Lani) Fangmeier of Indiana; as well as dear great nieces and nephews, co-workers, students and friends.

Colleagues, students and friends are invited to meet at Carthage College in the A.F. Siebert Chapel (2001 Alford Park Dr.) on Thursday, May 3, 2018 at 11:30 a.m. for a service remembering and celebrating Ruth’s life with Rev. Kara Baylor officiating.   Her interment will take place at the Cleveland Lutheran Cemetery in Cleveland, OH.  In lieu of flowers, memorials have been suggested to the Carthage College Social Work Department.

So sad to hear of Ruth’s passing. I always enjoyed her company and her quick wit while working at Carthage years ago. My condolences go out to her family and co-workers at Carthage.

You were such a good buddy Ruth! Your understanding, blunt wisdom, laser sharp assessment skills, no-nonsense humor, genuine caring and delightful quirkiness will always be something I hold dear. I am grateful you were part of my life and I know many others are feeling your loss for similar reasons. God bless and Godspeed my friend.

What a dear classmate from Lutheran High School West in Rocky River! My sincere sympathies to her loved ones for she was a blessing to all who knew her.

So sorry to hear of Ruth’s passing. She was very kind when we were members of Mt. Pleasant and she made me laugh. She will be missed.

Testimonials

February 20, 2019

Mike and his team did a fabulous job with the memorial service for our Mom. It was perfect and he made the process easy for me to go through during such a difficult time. She had chosen the funeral home before hand, and she made the right choice. The service was beautiful, simple, and sweet. Thank you for your kindness and generosity.
