
Racine- Mrs. Valborg “Vollie” Knudson, 97, passed away at Wheaton Franciscan- St. Mary’s Medical Center on Tuesday, September 19, 2006. Vollie was born in Bjerkrem, Norway on October 14, 1908 to the late Velas and Ingeborg (nee: Stensland) Birkrem. She came to the United States in 1926, proudly becoming a US citizen in 1935. On November 20, 1948 in Atonement Lutheran Church, Vollie was united in marriage with the love of her life, Helmar E. Knudson, who preceded her in death on February 18, 2005. Many years ago, Vollie was employed at Hamilton Beach. Years later, she was employed by Surepak, retiring in 1973. She was a longtime member of Atonement Lutheran Church. Vollie was passionately devoted to her family, making them her number one priority. She was a phenomenal cook, especially her Norwegian specialties – Lefse, Krumkake and Lutefisk, just to name a few. Vollie also enjoyed the Norwegian craft of tatting. Surviving are her loving daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Joseph Georgeson of Fredonia; grandchildren, Amy (TouGer) Lee of Waukesha; Michael (Sara) Georgeson of St. Paul, MN; great-grandchildren, Lance Georgeson of St. Paul, MN and Grace Lee of Waukesha; sister, Olaug Engh of Norway; many special nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends in both Norway and the United States. In addition to her parents and husband, Vollie was preceded in death by her sister, Ingrid (Erling) Hovland; brothers-in-law, Fritchjof Engh and Alfred Knudson; and sister-in-law, Carol (Chester) DeYoung. Funeral services will be celebrated on Saturday, September 23, 2006 at 10:00 am in Atonement Lutheran Church, 2915 Wright Ave., with Rev. Denise Mbise officiating. Interment will follow in West Lawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be at the church on Saturday from 9-10 am. In memory of Vollie, memorials may be made to Atonement Lutheran Church or to Vitas Hospice. A special note of thanks to caring staffs at Vitas Hospice and Wheaton Franciscan- St. Mary’s 2C for providing compassionate end-of-life care to our Mom and Grandma. God bless all of you!
