Vernette I. Baars

Aug 5, 1923 – Dec 3, 2006

Mrs. Vernette I. Baars, 83, died at St. Mary’s Medical Center on Sunday, December 4, 2006. A lifetime resident of Racine, she was born on August 5, 1923 to the late Rudolph and Lydia (nee: Pflugradt) Zellmer. On September 16, 1944 she married Clifford Baars, Sr. in Epiphany Lutheran Church. Together, they owned and operated Sturtevant True Value Hardware for 35 years until retiring in 1993. He preceded her in death on May 9, 1998. Mrs. Baars was a longtime member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church. She dedicated her life to not only her family and family business, but more importantly, taking care of her daughter, Barbara. In addition to Barbara, her survivors include her son, Clifford (Mayuree) Baars, Jr.; grandchildren, Kevin, Wayne, Mollie and Malinda Baars all of Racine and her niece, Elaine (Robert) Rogers of Illinois. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Harvey Zellmer. Family and friends are invited to meet at Holy Cross Lutheran Church (corner of Taylor and Lathrop Avenues) on Thursday, December 7, 2006 at noon for the celebration of her life with Rev. David Behling officiating. There will be a visitation in the church on Thursday morning from 10:30 until the time of the service. Private burial will take place in West Lawn Memorial Park. Memorials have been suggested to either Holy Cross Lutheran Church or Lutheran High School.
