Herbert Schmeling

vet
May 28, 1930 – Jun 22, 2012

Racine– Herbert Schmeling, 82, passed away peacefully and left his earthly confines at Wheaton Franciscan – All Saints Medical Center on Friday, June 22, 2012 to join his beloved son, Frank, and his other dear family members and friends that have passed before him.

Herbert was born on May 28, 1930 to the late Berta (nee: Kuhnke) and Hugo Schmeling in East Prussia, Germany. He immigrated to the United States in 1951, settled in Racine, and worked for Racine Steel Castings. Shortly after, he was drafted by the U.S. Army and served a tour in the Korean War. He was discharged as Corporal Herbert Schmeling.

After the War, he returned to Racine and became employed by ACME Die Casting, where he worked for over 40 years. With a tireless work ethic, he retired as Director of Die Casting.

Herbert faced many adversities in life, but he always made it through. He was a hard working gentleman who will be sorely missed by family and friends.

Surviving are his former wife, Hilde Johnson; daughter, Ingrid Metz; granddaughters, Samantha (Aaron Lawrence) Metz and Krystal Schrader; great-grandchildren, Cora Mays, Christopher Schrader, Nadia Gould and Miley Schrader; sister, Ruth (John) Robson; nephew, Chris (Jennifer) Robson – and their children, Benjamin and Abigail Robson; other special relatives and friends too numerous to mention by name.

In addition to his parents, Herbert was preceded in death by his beloved son, Frank Schmeling (in 1983); son-in-law, David Metz (in 2003) and by other family members.

Funeral services will be held in the Draeger-Langendorf Funeral Home on Thursday, June 28, 2012 at 11 am. Interment, with military honors, will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery, Hwy 32. Visitation will be in the funeral home on Wednesday from 5-7 pm and on Thursday from 10-11 am. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Schmeling family have been suggested.

Special thanks to Dr. Dasovic, Dr. Waltenberger and every single staff member at Wheaton Franciscan – All Saints for their compassionate care and support during this difficult time.
