Dorothy "Hellen" McKinney

May 7, 1931 – Nov 15, 2009

Dorothy Hellen McKinney, 78, was called Home by her Lord and Savior on Sunday, November 15, 2009. She was born in New Albany, MS on May 7, 1931 to the late Robert and Eula (nee: Patton) Hopkins. She was united in marriage to Edgar McKinney in April of 1946, in New Albany, MS. In 1947 Hellen relocated to Racine, WI following her husband to settle as a family. She had been employed at Dominican College, S.C. Johnson and Son, Inc., and The Breakers as a cook. She was a member of Christ Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, serving as Senior Mother of the Church. Affectionately known as Momma Hellen by many, she enjoyed babysitting, cooking, fishing, gardening, gaming and being with her family, friends and church family. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. Surviving are her children, Lillian Boykin of Racine, Edgar “Carl” McKinney of Franklin, WI, Tina McKinney of Racine, Teresa McKinney of Marietta, GA, and granddaughter Terra McKinney of Milwaukee, WI whom she raised from birth; 11 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, 4 great-great grandchildren; Godchildren, Donnie Snow and Constance Howard both of Racine; brothers, Finner (Ruby) Hopkins of Racine, and James Hopkins of Detroit. Her nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, church family, and friends further survive her. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Edgar McKinney, son-in-law, James Boykin, brother, LaVerne Hopkins, sisters, Leola Hill-Doxey, Lucille Hopkins, Mamie Hill, Burmia Barker, and Betty Albritton. Homegoing Services will be held at Christ Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, 815 Park Ave. in Racine on Friday, November 20th at 11 a.m. with Pastor Mark D. Gates officiating and Bishop Lawrence L. Kirby co-officiating. Burial will follow in Graceland Cemetery. Visitation will be in the church on Thursday, November 19th from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. and at the church on Friday, from 10:00 a.m. until the start of services.
