
Racine – Helen Almuth (nee: Light) Selkurt, 87, passed away unexpectedly at her home on Tuesday, July 10, 2012.
Helen was born in Peoria, IL on November 6, 1924 to the late Henry and Mary (nee: Issac) Light. On May 31, 1941, in New Lisbon, Missouri, she was united in marriage to Leonard Selkurt, who preceded her in death on March 5, 2008.
Helen was proud of her lifelong vocation of being a full-time wife, mother, and grandmother. Her passion in life was her family. Helen took pride in making others comfortable in her home and at her table. In recent years, Helen additionally enjoyed being together with her rescued canine companion, Dixie.
With a profound Christian faith, Helen was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church.
Surviving are her children Dr. Joanne (Dr. Brad) Martin, Loretta (Dan) Miner, LaVerne Selkurt, Dr. Lynette (Dr. George) Zimmer, Leonard Selkurt and Amy Selkurt; grandchildren Dr. Julie (Steve) Hayden, Gwendolyn (Phuong) Nguyen, Dr. Elizabeth (Andy) Bjerke, Cassie Selkurt, Chloe Selkurt, Julie (Ed Parks) Zimmer-Parks and Jeff (Kelly) Zimmer; great-grandchildren Izaac, Grace and Anna Nguyen; Lily and Alex Hayden; Logan and Madeline Bjerke and Zoe Zimmer; brother, Donald (Carol) Light; sisters Edna (Dwain) McKinney and Edith “Mandy” (Don) Holmes; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
In addition to her parents and husband, Helen was preceded in death by her beloved son, Richard, in 2000; sisters Hazel, Marie, and Harriet; brother John; Leonard’s parents Ephriam and Amanda (nee: Stirley) Selkurt; brothers-in-law Ewald (Ruth) Selkurt and Alvin (Margaret) Selkurt; and sister-in-law Johanna (Robert) Keener.
Funeral services will be held in the Draeger-Langendorf Funeral Home on Saturday July 14, 2012 at 10:00 am with Rev. Karl Luchterhand officiating. Interment will follow at West Lawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be in the funeral home on Saturday from 8:30 – 10:00 am. In memory of Helen, memorials to Canine Pet Rescue, Ltd. or to Lutheran Brail Workers have been suggested.
